Like the reviewer, I thought the comedy works most of the time.

In particular, in episode 2, it seemed like Ririsa was about to walk in on Mikari in a compromising position. Not only did that not happen, but instead it was Mikari who later walks in at an awkward time.

Quote:
Even the otaku obsession bits felt very surface level [...] It's relatable but a bit generic. Maybe future episodes can go deeper.
I agree here. If the series wants to explore otaku themes, I'd prefer for it to dive in for a deeper look, not just aim for a shallow, vague sense of familiarity.

Quote:
I really hope we at least get a broader view of the cos-rom scene or outside responsibilities sometime soon
The flashforward and flashback scenes in episode 1, along with the OP, suggests that will eventually happen along with expanding the cast.

Well my major complain about this is obviously the censoring.
Its not only censoring at this point its cutting things, they cut entire pages of the manga, dialogues and even changed outfits, if they are gonna do all that maybe they shouldn't even try.
Aside from that, well, they atleast do the basics nothing to complain or to praise.

I'm really enjoying it! I like Ririsa, Okumura, and Mikari and their romances (poor Mikari couldn't be a more obvious losing Heroine if she had blue hair), I like how seriously they treat their work, and I like the cosplaying.

Also kind of weird for a show with fanservice and that takes free expression through cosplay, however revealing, so seriously.

I’m not bothering with this series. The manga is okay, and I’m following it, at least for a while.

In answer to the reviewer’s question, it does branch out into the wider cosplay world, with cons, and more cosplayers and fans. Potato-kun learns about photography to support the girl’s cosplay ambitions, there’s run-ins with the student council, etc., etc.

I wanted to point this out as well. The manga (and the author) have moved away from the heavy fanservice cosplay-just-an-excuse aspects by focusing more on the cosplay (but still with romcom elements and still quite fanservice). The anime doesn't do anything the manga hasn't done before*.

* The best examples are when, spoiler[a few volumes later, they (Okumura) get rid of the R-18 material in the room in order to become an official club. Or when the mangaka - in the manga - is asked why he does not draw more skimpy outfits, he replies: "Because my daughter is cosplaying as my character, d'uh!"]

Yeah, I wish the same folks that did Gushing over Magical Girls would have done this. Because they added stuff and made it even more interesting than the manga. But I'm enjoying it nonetheless.

This is my second favorite show of this season (Oshi no Ko being number 1). I like the characters and general vibe of the show. And I am not botheted by whatever heavy fanservice was cut from the manga.

I'm enjoying it just like I do the manga. I get that it can be a bit tough for a non-manga reader with these first three episodes, because they are essentially one long character intro arc for the main trio in the series.

With the next storyline, things start to change quite a bit. The cast will soon grow and the world of cosplay and otaku fandom explored in much further detail. Including Cos-ROMs, professional cosplayers, and even queerness in the cosplaying community.

Okumura begins evolving into a much more nuanced character as well. He begins to slowly spoiler[work through his issues with women] and even spoiler[figure out that there's at least a couple girls in the club who like him, causing him to rethink his whole attitude about things. The maturity of his response was very impressive to see in the manga.]

I don't know if this means I'm more jaded with anime or Japan but my favorite part of the series is Okumura doesn't use "chan" for either girl.... unless it means he doesn't see them as people but just the bodies for their cosplay/characters.

They call him "sempai", he just calls them by their name. Their first names...
It's the second one, isn't it? But he has always called Mikari "Mikari" so I don't know.

Anyways, the second thing I like is that despite Mikari protesting everything, she still reads the manga because she has developed a connection to it. Even if she wears the hair of the heroine because of Okamura, she is fully in favor of the forever third wheel demon Mirielle.

Using given names without honorifics indicates a great degree of closeness. In Mikari's case, they've known each other since they were kids, so it makes sense. In Ririsa's case, Ririsa specifically asked him to address her that way. By normal standards, it's way too soon, but it happens a lot in anime.

My favorite part of the episode was seeing all of the more experienced cosplayers help out the inexperienced Lilysa in her time of need.

I think it's the cosplay CD that they made. CD-ROM.

This episode went a long way towards dispelling the notion I've had that the three main characters are all genuinely stupid. Watching them "be normal" was good.

I both respect and feel bad for Mikari that she helped out her rival in love so much from making Ririsa realize her feeling to giving her fashion tips. She's too good to be a Losing Heroine (though I guess they often are Best Girls).

Just a lot of girls supporting girls in this show, which is nice to see, especially how supportive the cosplay community is. Minus a Tomozaku Sugita busybody.

And Ririsa and Okumura's relationship is steadily progressing which is great.
