Innocence is an underrated film. I hope that it can get a better reception with a theatrical release.

There’s an error in the article. It states that the screenings are meant to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Ghost in the Shell franchise but this year is the 20th anniversary of Innocence and next year is the 30th anniversary of the first film.
That said though I’m SO glad GKids got the rights! |

I just watched this again a few nights ago, maybe with the newer Bandai dub for the first time. I think I like the original MANGA one slightly better, but either way, this is one of my favorite anime films. Great to see someone get the rights to it.

In a lot of ways I liked this more than the first film. I still have the old steelbook edition DVD Bandai put out years ago. I wonder which dub they'll play since they had to make a new dub for the US release because of the PAL conversion issues.

I was going to write the exact same thing. It's different enough that it's pretty easy to find things you like more in one vs. the other. I don't think it's as re-watchable as the first, not just because the first is REALLY short. I haven't watched it in about a decade. I bought the 4K disc of the first movie last year and was planning on doing a double feature, but much like most of my plans to watch movies these days, that never happened. |

I wonder if this means it will finally get an English dub as well.

Good memories of watching this in the theater when it was new. There were ads for it on basic cable!

PAL conversion wasn't exactly some arcane, unknown art. It's how every European TV aired in the US was prepared for broadcast until we entered the HD era. More likely, they would probably have had to pay Manga to use their dub, and decided that producing a new one with Animaze, the company that had done nearly every prior Ghost in the Shell dub, was the better option.
The first one was produced by Richard Epcar's company for the UK release, the second was done by Kevin Seymour/Animaze a few years later - one of his final projects. Only the Stand Alone Complex cast is the same in the two dubs, all the original characters have different voices. I mostly prefer the Animaze dub, I think it has sharper and more well thought out voice direction and a better sound mix. There are a few exceptions though, like Kim who just sounds too dry and dull in the Animaze dub. |

The Ghost In The Shell franchise is 35 years old this year (manga was published in 1989), the 1995 film turns 30 next year, and Innocence's 20th anniversary is this year. |

I remember the film being a bit word-salad-ish with all the philosophy quoting going on, but watching the newer dub, this didn't seem to bother me as much? I think the small changes to the script translation made for an overall cleaner delivery and conveyance of the themes and ideas. The improved voice direction probably made a huge difference. I still think I prefer the original character VA's in the first dub. I will also chime in on preferring this movie to the first in many ways. |

I too prefer Innocence over the first movie and it’s kind if surprising to see some people share the same sentiment given what I remember the discourse heavily leaning toward way back when the movie first dropped.
It’s just a warmer and funnier movie, though the mood and visuals of the first movie are still pretty killer. |

The Bandai release which introduced that dub also included the old dub which had problems because it was slowed down for NTSC. |
