This is the first time I'm seeing Comedy Central mentioned on this website. I'm even more surprised that Comedy Central has a page in the encyclopedia. Seriously, a comedy based on Golden Axe, is that feasible? Because Comedy Central doesn't do dramas.

Hold up.

Golden Axe? As a comedy?

The original arcade game was mostly gritty with the only comedic bits throughout being the heroes kicking thieves around like soccer balls for meat and magic and that incredibly meta ending.

I don't know how making it an absolute comedy can genuinely work unless Comedy Central can get some incredibly skilled writers to make the jokes work with the violent action.

Mike McMahan is helming it. Kind of disappointed they dropped Lower Decks for Golden Axe.

Even as someone who enjoyed Golden Axe on the Sega Genesis way back in 1990, I don't know if I would have even watched a hypothetical early 1990s Golden Axe cartoon as a teenager. (I wasn't really into any of the Sonic the Hedgehog cartoons back then either, even as a Sega partisan.)

I can say for sure that I'm not the slightest bit interested in watching a Golden Axe cartoon today, even for nostalgia. I will grant that I'm aging out of being within the target demographic for anything but I'm not sure who the target audience is for an adaptation of a B-tier Sega franchise that hasn't had a worthwhile entry since the 16-bit era. (I know that Sega's making a new Golden Axe game but I'm not convinced that it'll be any more well-received than Golden Axe: Beast Riders on the XBox 360 and Playstation 3.)

So I guess this is going to be a similar style only replacing Star Trek with Golden Axe.

I could see it working for a short series, parody of 80's/90's cartoon style (e.g. X-Men, He-Man, Visionaries, etc..) through the lens of a game. Cant see it getting a 2nd season and there may be too many episodes in this ordered season.

You make it sound like it's a Saturday Morning show, but it's so obviously gonna be a tongue-in-cheek adaptation targeting adults who played the game as kids. It's clear just by reading the character descriptions.

Quote:
CBS Studios with Sony Pictures Television and Original Film will handle the series. They describe the series:

A hilarious and loving homage to Sega's 1989 video game series, Golden Axe, from exec producers Mike McMahon and Joe Chandler, follows veteran warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare and Gilius Thunderhead as they once again battle to save Yuria from the evil giant Death Adder who just won't seem to stay dead. Fortunately, this time they have the inexperienced and underprepared Hampton Squib on their side.

So, one can say, they were Drawn Together? Laughing

I understand that it's a comedy, it's on Comedy Central, but as someone who played the original Golden Axe game going on three and a half decades ago, I could see there only being enough comedy potential for roughly a five minute Robot Chicken sketch (yeah, I know Robot Chicken is Adult Swim and not Comedy Central) and even then they'd probably have to pad it out with a couple of marijuana jokes.

I can see this going one of two ways: Either as an over the top cartoony adventure show that tries to fill itself with one liners and never tries to tell a very cohesive story, or as a semi-serious fantasy show with lots of crude humor ala The Legend of Vox Machina. With Danny Pudi voicing a new bumbling sidekick character I have my doubts about this show ever taking itself seriously so it's probably going to go the way of the former.

I doubt he dropped one for the other. He and some of the Lower Decks actors have said they're hoping the show is revived by another streaming service (like what happened with Star Trek: Prodigy) so if it were up to McMahan he would probably be working on both shows.

Either way, I'm glad he found a new series. Lower Decks is the best American animated show in years.

Titmouse is doing the animation, and while they can do action animation (GI Joe Resolute was them), I’m expecting something visually like Lower Decks.

If you had to turn a random Sega game into a Comedy Central lowbrow comedy, well, better this than Persona.
