How can breaking the franchise's box office record not be good?
It's also still at #2 in the box office after a month. That's always a good thing.

I kinda got used to think that nowadays anything below 10 million is a failure.

I mean, you did read the article, right? Gundam SEED Freedom already reached 3.4 Billion yen after a month in theaters. That's more or less 23 Million USD. And the movie will keep making money after this, both in Japan & later overseas.

I was talking about the number of tickets.

But anyway, great.

It would be nice if this motivated Sunrise to make more Seed Gundam anime.

That's almost 10% of japanese population dude, and that would be above 100 million USD.
Its way to much, there's barely 10 anime movies that did that well irc.

Now the director is busy making a Mazinger spinoff. The closest to a sequel is an extra chapter from the SEED Freedom novel.

Most anime movies are just lazy cash grabs. Biggest one I can think of tensura which severely underperformed despite it given massive number of screening and crunchyroll fast tracking it for a US release. It was a filler movie on top of a ln series with the slowest pacing in anime and plot being just overpowered mc beating dozens of new characters.

So I am not surprised why this movie is doing so well serving as the epic finale for kira Yamato and Co.

he just tweeted about doing a storyboard for something SEED related but nothing definite yet. he has also been teasing about an OVA about the Freedom hijacking. Souichiro Hoshi or Kira's VA has also been vocal about there being sequel. so we'll see.

as for the boxoffice records, a bit bummed that FREEDOM dropped quite a bit in the rankings, i wonder if it'll ever get to 4 billion yen in Japan alone.

It is a sequel to a 20 year old hit and Gundam wasn't aimed at a huge audience like shonens. And recency bias is a huge thing in japan. But legit one look at the trailers can indicate that this movie provides a far far better experience than what demon slayer, haikyuu, spy x can offer no matter what new fans say.

As for any animated sequel, sunrise didn't expect seed freedom to do this well plus morosawa passed away long ago. So it will take many many years before you see cosmic era get a unicorn treatment. It is probably in pre production phase. I say they should adapt astray. Keep it separate from the main story.

thanks, that cheered me up quite a bit Smile especially when you said the trailers indicate something fun and fresh than what most of the anime movies these days or at least what its immediate competition now has to offer.

i just wish the rest of the mainstream audience in Japan recognized that but ah oh well, that's the loss or downside you take for this IP and its popularity back then getting abruptly halted. come to think of it, it is sort of a miracle that it's getting a kind of revival now with the newer fans accepting or acknowledging it was a thing and could still be a huge thing these days. depends i guess how Ban/Rise will react to this moving forward. i did read from Japanese feedback that the kids of fans now who were young adults or teenage fans back then seem to like the movie and are rediscovering SEED so we'll see. plus it's nice how new fans whether young new or old new are more forgiving of SEED despite being gaslit into thinking by others that it's bad-bad-bad.

as for what a sequel could mean... it may seem like Fukuda has accepted his film screenwriting partner as the spiritual successor to Morosawa. we'll see! personally i want something where Athrun is the main protag because i think he really deserves it after all these years. i know his arc is supposed to be completed but that's what everyone thought too with Kira before the movie. i dont mind a big timejump either.
