I'm sure she had a lot building up to this, more than any news piece could say about her work. I'm sorry it came to this and hope she's at peace.

I read all of Sand Chronicles on my plane ride back from Japan last year. I thought I'd finally finish it after reading a few chapters in the Shojo Beat magazine almost 20 years ago.
The manga is a tough read and suicide is a central, recurring theme. I'm so sorry Ashihara was pained in this way and felt she couldn't get support she needed. Rest in peace.

I absolutely loved Sand Chronicles and having such a tragedy befall the author...absolutely heartbreaking.
RIP Ashihara-san.

Definitely no way any person's life should end. Never read her work, though I think I've at least heard of Sand Chronicles by name, but RIP.

The only thing I remembered about Sand Chronicles was reading it previously in Shojo Beat, and that's it. But otherwise, RIP to the author.

I am so heartbroken about this. I read Sand Chronicles at a pretty early age when I was first seeking out other manga after reading the bigger titles that were readily available at my local library, and while I haven't revisited it in a good while, I still remember it having an emotional impact on me at the time. I'm so sad she wasn't able to get the help and support she needed.

Thank you for saying this. I suffer from depression and when it's bad most people I know react like just suck it up. If it were that easy it's what people would do.
