Deadline also has it at a few million away from being the second-highest grossing international film here. So if you all feel like doing an Endgame, and pushing it up before the 1st...

I’m pleasantly surprised it made more money in the US than Japan, despite not having an English dub.

Speaking of Korean films, it's also more successful than The Host. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt0468492/?ref_=bo_se_r_2

I find it weird that Minus One hasn't received an English dub yet, I think Shin Godzilla was given a dub by Funimation when it was released years ago.
Here in Spanish-speaking America Minus One got received a dub made in Mexico by ArtWorks, the same dubbing studio that dubbed anime like Attack on Titan, Rent-a-Girlfriend, Kemono Jihen and the redubs for anime like Cowboy Bebop, FMAB and Future Boy Conan. Though this is the first time they dubbed a live-action movie

The top two spots belong to 2000's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (US$129 million) and 1997's Life is Beautiful (US$57.6 million).

Feel like the second number is off, since that's less money.

The interview was an entertaining watch. There's some useful advice for creators in general, I think. Yamazaki was smart to make this film as different from Shin Godzilla as possible, so that Minus One would stand out. Also smart of him to focus on things he knows well and has experience filming (all the stuff with battleships). And wise how he took useful feedback to heart on the script (his talk about coming up with two-step plans, to keep significant action scenes from feeling too brief).

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is the top-grossing foreign language film in the US at $129 million, Life is Beautiful is second at $57.6 million, and Godzilla Minus One is third at $55 million.

I see now, the numbers were referring to different things. (I read Godzilla's 102 million, which would be higher than 57, but the article shifted from global earnings to US earnings. My mind also figured top two spots = second, then first, since Godzilla was the comparative third just beforehand.)

I don't think Funimation dubbed Shin Godzilla until after it had its main theatrical run in the States. More importantly, though, it's my understanding Toho has been directly responsible for distributing Minus One here, rather than licensing it out. That's kind of unprecedented for the franchise, and undoubtedly leads to different approaches. I would guess Toho might not want the film dubbed this time, or at least is more interested in presenting the film as-is. A lot of dubs were missing from Criterion's Showa Era set, and while those were probably due mostly to (non-existent?) copyright fears, I'd still bet Toho is not putting much priority in "English-friendly" versions of the films now (ironic though that may be).
