As a die-hard Super Robot Wars fan, I am going to be frank about this one:

Do not even try to bother with SRW:OG the OVA if you have not played through both Super Robot Taisen Original Generation and Super Robot Taisen Original Generation 2, both of which are available in English through Atlus on the GBA.

The story has little appeal to outsiders because it is in nature, a sequel to the games.

The story and the characters will only generate attachment for those who have already played through OG1 and OG2 and are familiar with the characters already. For fans, there are few things more satisfying than perennial fan favorite Sanger come crashing through the space, cutting down all in his path with his Zankantou / Colossal Blade while shouting CHEESTTTTOOOOO *cue Aku wo tatsu tsurugi nari on pipe-organ in the background*... "Wa ga zankantou ni....tatenu mono nashi! (There is nothing my Colossal Blade cannot smite.)

To sum it up:
Fans of Super Robot Wars and have played through OG1, OG2, this is highly recommended.
If you have not played through OG1 and OG2, don't bother.

Not true. I haven't played ANY SRW games, and I still loved the show. Too bad the TV series is not as good

Too bad for Bandai Visual there's no way in hell I'm paying their prices to find out for myself.

I'll say it once, and I'll say it again: the only thing I could hear from BVUSA that I'd count as good news is an announcement that they're pulling out of the U.S. market and handing off all their licenses to Bandai Entertainment.

I would tend to agree, but giant mecha destruction DOES tend to appeal to certain groups of people, regardless of their familiarity with the games.

As for me, I got into the games around the time that Alpha and Alpha Gaiden were new, I then went into a binge of the older games, and to date, I still haven't finished the lot of them. Regardless, seeing this series is a necessity for me. Laughing

Your opinion.

I'm not a mech fan at all. I often shop for anime based on VA's & this one is loaded. Shinichiro Miki, Ryotaro Okiayu, Toshiyuki Morikawa spring to mind easiest, but this one is full of name brand players.

And I loved this one. I even watched it twice when I got it which is rare considering how backed up I am on watching stuff. (I also watched Demon Prince Enma 3 times)

I find the quality of the Bandai Visual dvds excellent. Between the book & the extra dvd, any other company (like Funimation) would call this a "Limited Edition" & charge $39.95 at least so their price isn't really that extreme. Plus one can work it down to $30 easily enough (pre-order discounts, club discounts. I paid $32.39 for this one)

I preferred it to the endless Gundam titles out there, but then I'm not a big fan of Gundam logic.

Bandai Visual too pricey? Tuff. Do you all want the makers of Rolls Royces or Mercedes to go out of business because you can't afford them? You get what you pay for in some instances. Burn Beverly Hills because you can't afford the houses there?

They are appealing to the type of anime fan who is the equivelent of the people buying homes in the more upscale neighborhoods. If you're so worried about price you won't even look in those neighborhoods.
If the price of Bandai Visual products sticks in your craw so badly, Bandai Visual isn't for you.
Bandai Visual is targeting people who appreciate the quality of their product

One thing that irritates me about SRW is that the crossover games will never make it Stateside because of licensing issues Crying or Very sad

Dood, the SWR animations are not what I'd call "Rolls Royce" quality.

And you try offering your wares for 1.5(or more) times the price of everyone else's wares and see where it gets you.

It's dudette.

Anime isn't unlike mini-monopolies.

I would love someone to license Meine Liebe. If someone did, I'd deal with whatever package deals were offered by the licensee.

ADV put the first Saiyuki series out in 2 6-dvd sets which I bought as they were individually released.
Geneon put out Reload & Gunlock in 7 dvd sets so I paid for an extra dvd in each set.
If I want Saiyuki, why would I settle for something else just because it's cheaper?

I lucked out because ADV released GetBackers in 2 5-dvd boxes (which I also pre-ordered individual dvds on). How would buying Gunslinger Girls satisfy my desire for GetBackers? Why should I buy Naruto just because one can get 13 eps for $27 on sale?

As I said, I love Go Nagai. I bought Demon Prince Enma without batting an eye. I have been aware of Super Robot Wars for well over a year because it has a lot of the Voice actors I like so when it was licensed by Bandai Visual, it was a matter of whether I found the price worth it & I did.
If you don't, you don't. No one's forcing you to buy anything.
I say for all the extras included on the OVA(still waiting for my copy of the furst dvd fron the series to arrive), it;s not unlike buying the special edition. I could have paid $12.99 at FYE for PotC3, but instead I bought the $26 2 dvd set.

When I did concerts, I paid more for name bands at arenas than I did at a local bar for local bands.

It's Bandai Visual's bat & ball.

If ADV got/produced/released Seto no Hanayome for 4ep/$30 right this second, I'd be more inclined to get that than SRW OG DW for 2ep/$40.

Now, that said, You couldn't get me to go the 2/$40+ route with Hannayome, that'd be plain dumb on both a format capasity and finantial standing.

To wit, I'd love to buy BVU's junk but science isn't to the point where I can excriment gold just yet nor am I thick enough to think $40 dollars is a good asking price for anything less than 5 episodes.
