FFXVI had the biggest PS5 launch for Japan, but given how few PS5s there are out there that still puts it as a very low launch compared to previous Final Fantasy games. I'm curious how how the game will do long-term once the exclusivity contract is up. I'm waiting for the inevitable PC release myself as I do not have a PS5.

We have to take in mind that digital sales are much more common that they were in previous generations, though honestly I don't think they have contributed significantly to the number of copies sold. In fact, today's Media Create Sale data showed that FFXVI dropped to second place and the amount of copies showed a 90% drop. Now, RPGs usually tend to sell more at launch, except for games like Pokémon or Dragon Quest, but this was one of the sharpest drops for any FF game in recent times in Japan. Not to mention that the rest of the games list is comprised of Switch games and the Switch itself still outsold the PS5 by a big margin. I don't think FFXVI was going to be the game that would improve the PS5 sales in Japan, the FF and PS brands have fallen a lot in Japan, it's obvious that Sony is focused with the West now

It's very clear you haven't done any research before posting. Let me correct that: The 1st part of your sentence shows you know some basic/casual knowledge that PS5 software is so low that XVI is the biggest launch, but you could have seen a random post from anywhere so that doesn't guarantee anything. The bold shows you're just saying anything without really knowing anything. Correcting the bold:

1. The week before XV launched PS4 sold 3,524,009 via Famitsu (Media Create 3,626,673). PS5 the week before XVI launched was at 3,717,798 via Famitsu (Media Create was tracking higher with their last available numbers a few months ago & that should still be the case). This kills your statement, but lets continue...

2. We don't know how many of the 3.7m were scalped and/or purchased by foreign consumers outside of Japan to determine what the true PS5 numbers are.

3. Digital has increased greatly since 2016 when XV launched. FFVIIR having a abnormally high digital rate was a unique situation due to Covid State of Emergency causing digital to be about 400k (since it was worked out to be 1.1m in 3 days). PS5 currently doesn't have the power to replicate that. Same goes for retail... obviously.

4. PS4 sold 116,593 via Famitsu (MC 118,350) on XV's release. PS5 sold 85k on XVI's release. PS5 stock has been fixed in Japan since December (stated by Jim Ryan) and the data is available to see. Why did PS5 not sell 100k for XVI when stock is available? Is it the disappointing XVI bundle that is just the white PS5 with a digital copy of the game because apparently Sony forgot how to make a limited edition bundle while XV had the attractive limited edition PS4? or maybe its because people aren't as interested in XVI?

Media Create doesn't release on Thursdays. It releases in the next few days. You mean Famitsu. Also, FFVIIR stopped the decline of FF in Japan. While XVI brought the decline back, Rebirth has been having positive reception. PS5 will reach 4 million in July if it keeps above 40k and will be closer to 5 million when Rebirth launches. It will obviously have better numbers than XVI... the question is will it be the game to get close to or reach 1 million. And of course, its a sequel and sequels tend to have lower numbers, but FFVIIR is a unique case
