Del Rey Manga - Del Rey Books’s manga imprint that licensed the original Mermaid Melody manga - shut down in 2010, so I’d think around then. You would think that Kodansha USA would rescue the license for it, though, given that they licensed the sequel…. |

Getting Kodansha to care about any magical girl manga that's not Sailor Moon or Cardcaptor Sakura is as likely as telling the Kardashians to not suck. |

YT channel has a "Enchantix Realm" has an 11/23/2020: "Mermaid Melody: Pichi Pichi Pitch | English Dub Cast Talk about the Anime!" that has Brittney Karbowski (Hanon) and Carli Mosier (Rina) talk about the show. Brittney said that almost 50 sec. in that they dubbed the entire thing. The video is a clipped or similar vid from longer video from another acct. that was from Florida Supercon 2013 (the longer video is 10 on 9/3/2023).
In the quoted video, Carli said they did the show 8 years ago. This would put the show being recorded in 2005 and Britt's first anime role got recorded in 2004 or 2005. Chris Ayres directed this dub and I read apparently there was an Eng. dub for Singapore or Malaysia. YT channel "fireextinquisher" has a nearly 4.5-minute video from 8/27/2008 called "Mermaid Melody Dub Trailer" has footage of the Eng. dub that ADV did. Almost 3:30 in, it shows a behind-the-scenes clip of them recording the music into Eng. Last edited by Kadmos1 on Sun Sep 03, 2023 9:29 am; edited 1 time in total |

I remember growing up, always seeing this manga on a shelf. On sites like ANN here and there during Tokyopops glory days. Probably will never actually read or see it. But seeing this article pop up about the manga gave me some nostalgia for a series I never got into! LOL

The anime did get licensed, it's just ADV Films had to drop it after a clause in the contract mandated a TV deal that was never going to happen, yet another instance of Japanese companies not understanding the market here.

I had no idea the TV deal was why it never happened!
Makes sense why it made it over to Italy and Korea, then. Both had TV airings. In Japan, Pichi Pichi Pitch is currently going through a revival, with collaboration karaoke rooms, cafes, goods, talk shows, etc. I’d be surprised if a reboot anime wasn’t planned like with Tokyo Mew Mew (disclaimer: I have no idea about what they’re planning, this is my personal opinion) We still have yet to get a home media re-release yet in Japan! Which is apparently due to the original broadcaster going under. Apparently. |
