The Mario movie is a few hundred thousand dollars away from becoming Illumination's most successful film ever, surpassing the original Minions movie, which would make it the fifth most successful animated movie in history, unadjusted for inflation. Also, if it keeps doing well in theaters until the end of its run it may even beat The Incredibles II and the original Frozen, though at this point I don't think it can beat surpass Frozen II and 2019's Lion King. Still, the Mario Movie's performance has been incredible, in Mexico it became the second highest-grossing movie in the country, beating Avengers: Endgame.

It seems it had a better second weekend in Japan, grossing over $18 million dollars, only the latest Detective Conan movie had a bigger weekend at $ 23 million. Japan is an interesting movie market, it seems films there tend to stay longer in theaters and that generates more profits in the long run. I think Mario will probably surpass Despicable Me 3 as the highest-grossing Illumination movie in Japan, perhaps grossing over $100 million dollars at the end of its run.

Has anyone watched it yet? After the trailer, I decided don't waste my time on it but looking at that box office made me think twice. Is it the nostalgia of the 90s kids, or did they really do a good job?

It's kind of like a kid-friendly version of the Neflix Castlevania series. Plot is only so-so (same as every 3DCGI movie from the last decade or so), but there's enough attention to the little details in the visuals and music that at least make it fun to watch. I'd say it's worth it to catch on the big screen before it leaves theaters, unless you have a really big TV at home.

It's a solid family movie. Nothing amazing or special but I can see why it's doing so well.
