How many manga apps are there now?

Also, seems it's only pay per chapter and no sub, wonder how well that will go over, over here?

There's also BookWalker's app. And at least a couple of browser-only manga platforms(Renta, Manga Club, j-novel) as well.

Manga up, huh?
For this app, even a cleavage of an adult woman is censored.

Great news to some peoples.

Very expensive for binge reading, you don’t get permanent ownership (expires in 3 days), and horrendous censorship even when you’re on the website instead of the app. I don’t see myself ever using this.

Do not forget Comic Walker by Kadokawa.
Also Viz's SJ it is blocked to not-American (US & Canada) readers, redirecting them to Manga Plus.

To be honest, there are a ton of manga apps in Japan, too. But so far, just Shueisha has somewhat a plan: release their flagship(s)'s magazine mangas, and their idea of "the best" of their virtual magazine(s) until finally put their whole (new) catalogue online. The other publishers are releasing series without sense or rhyme.

Not to talk about the baffling currency system. I don't know how much they'd though this app before launching it...

It appears that many series are free (using 4 chapters worth of credits that renew twice per day) except for the last three chapters, but some like FMA are all paid (except for the first few chapters which are completely free). There is a bit of the "bonus" paid currency that you get for free when starting to use the app, but I'm sure that is just to entice you to actually pay.

So you can get by on reading some series for free, which I'm thinking of doing, but any that are available elsewhere likely have a better experience there (e.g., Comikey's licensed SE manga are a few chapters ahead of Manga Up, which is weird).

The other annoying thing is that some series split chapters into multiple parts. Which is nothing new, as Comikey also does this for some of the SE licensed series, but it is still clearly meant to increase credit usage.

Thanks for letting everyone know how bad the censorship is. What was SE thinking? It's not like Square Enix is new to manga or otaku culture. Then again, unless the digital manga is drm-free, I have no interest in it.

The Hero Who Returned Remains the Strongest in the Modern World

The manga is more censored than TV anime, even a bra can't appear.

I'm guessing it's due to Apple's adult content policies. They would either have to censor content to meet Apple's standards, allow renting chapters on the website, or not release 18+ series at all.

It's the reason why 18+ content doesn't appear in the Shonen Jump app (e.g., Dandadan). I'm not sure how Manga Plus gets around it though (unless they exclude certain series on iOS, but I haven't heard of that [I have an Android phone]).

The censorship that was applied seems to be very inconsistent between series, as well as within individual series, or at times even on the same page.
An example of cleavage being censored inconsistently within the same page

Thanks for the explanation. I do remember hearing about how Apple is weirdly prudish about certain content. I wonder if guys like Netflix have to experience similar scrutiny (Netflix does have a few NC-17 films on their service).

Anyway, it would have been nice if SE was at least upfront about the censorship.
