That's absolutely nuts. I had to do a double take when I saw the word "shot". . His legacy will definetly be felt, his realignment of the JSDF to be able to project power will impact the region for decades.

Regardless of your opinion on Abe, what I'm mostly worried about is conservative backlash. Anti-privacy laws, stricter travel restrictions, government checkpoints, that sort of thing. Even though Japan has insanely low homicide rates, political assassinations always result in a lot of theater.

It's scary how efficient he was with that handmade gun. The chest and the neck, geez...

I know Abe has had critics during his tenure as Prime Minister, but I can't believe one of them would go as far as to shoot him with a handmade gun.

I hope whoever had the nerve to shoot and kill him is held responsible. Life in prison would be a much preferable punishment for such a horrific crime.

Considering that the assassin was arrested at the scene, he's guaranteed to face some manner of, likely incredibly severe, consequences for his actions.
Edit: I first heard about the shooting right before lunch today (working in Japan currently), and I'm honestly still in shock over it.

Well I am shocked about this news, I am not saddened either. Abe wanted to push to militarize Japan with his policies and this rubbed people the wrong way. The fact that somebody actually shot him is unbelievable especially since owning a firearm in Japan is prohibited for most citizens. I'm sure this event will have repercussions and cause a lot of politicians to reassess how they deliver speeches in public. I also hope that a lot of the politicians will reassess their thoughts on staying in office until they're basically dead rather than retiring at a proper age. Japan has way too many old politicians with out-of-date ideas which are running the country into the ground.

Title should be changed. He didn't pass away. He was shot and killed, and/or assasinated.
Sad day.

This is nuts! I thought guns were severely restricted in Japan for civilians?

Supposedly it was a hand made gun, it sure put out a lot of smoke. Sounded more like a canon going off in the video.

Regardless of your feelings for the man's politics, this is very sad news and I pray for his family and all of Japan.

I always found Abe Shinzo very endearing in the past 10-15 years I've been following him. It is very sad to see such a state befall him. Rest in peace. Thoughts and prayers with his family and loved ones.
Hope the assailant gets the most stringent of punishments for this dastardly and horrific act.
