I've heard of these things before. Like the article says, basically someone uploads a "just the good parts" edit of the movie and then, at least where Youtube is concerned, gets the ad revenue off it. There isn't any commentary, review, or other use of it to illustrate a point. It's just about siphoning views.

Rape in Japan: Gets you a minimum sentence of 5 years, perhaps more. Used to be 3 before 2017.
Copyright Infringement in Japan: Can get you up to 10 years in prison, 90 thousand dollars of fine, or both simultaneously. Nice! |

I don't want this to come across as me disagreeing with the point you're trying to make, because I agree with that, but it is a bit disingenuous to be comparing the minimum of 5 years with the maximum of 10 |

Every country has the right to devise its own law. The holier-than-thou attitude is uncalled for.

This. Absurd hyperbole doesn't bring anything to a discussion. It's just grandstanding for the sake of being heard, especially as it's two unrelated matters in two typically different spheres of the legal system (copyright violations are generally civil actions thus usually get only money damages unless some other factors come into play, whereas sexual assault is a criminal offense where money damages are by definition not suitable). |

Ah! What do we have here? The typical foreigner response to anything related to Japanese laws. Can you come up with new material? Oh, wait! You can't because that's the only thing you know. The only reason you to decided to post is to push your agenda dealing with your issue in regards to how another country handles something you don't like... because after reading this article about copyright, who in their right mind expected to see a comparison, but not just any simple comparison, a random comparison to rape in the comment section as an example? I say this with confidence... No one, except for others like you who intended to post the same thing. |

Nice derailment there, Hellsoldier.
Let's get back on the tracks. Any further responses will be removed. |

Every country has the right to make its own laws but it's insane that bootlegging just part of a film can land you in prison.

Well, perhaps in the U.S. such an edited video might fall under fair use in Situation A but not Situation B. Now, how much of a review, commentary, or similar would be needed for a local court to say "Yep, in this situation it is fair use!" is debatable. |

Does anyone else find it kinda funny that this story is happening within a week of the new Rescue Rangers movie release? What with the movie practically covering the whole issue of bootlegs?
Or is everyone still having a hissyfit over Hellsoldier's little comment? |

The studios are so sure that every one of those violations is someone who otherwise would have gone to a theater to see their crappy movies? Dream on. An American court would throw this case out. Jail time for copyright violation? Japan is the new corporate dictatorship. The US is headed there but the whole trend of corporate oligarchy started here.

It's copyright infringement if what you make/upload isn´t "transformative". Cutting Jar Jar out of EP 1 (sold for profit or not) ain´t that and this is an even more transparent con. The studios got every right to stamp them into the dirt.
