I appreciate that this review answered the main question I had, which was whether this was just Ultimax or actually had both Arena games' story mode. It wouldn't have made a lot of sense to just release just Ultimax to an audience that may very well not have played Arena, but I could easily see that happening. I have the PS3 version of both games, and was only interested in this if it had both stories on there since the main reason for me to play them is that they are sequels to my favorite game ever.
Maybe this would have been a good time to tweak the title of the game to something like "Persona 4 Arena + Ultimax" to make it clearer that it wasn't a re release of just the one game.

Ultimax included Arena's story, though.

Uh, no, it did not. Arena Ultimax on the PS3/360 was a sequel to Arena. Both had their own story. The review has a whole paragraph dedicated to explaining that, despite having the name Arena Ultimax, it is actually a compilation of the two games' story modes.

It actually did have the storymode of the first game, it was included as a DLC add-on though.

Not sure what this is about. Erin Fitzgerald is the VA for Chie in every game except Persona 4's original release, when it was Tracey Rooney.

Gah, you're right. I missed where the VA changeover originally happened, and Ms. Fitzgerald sounds really different and close to the original performance during the Arena story. I'll see if I can't ask editorial to knock that bit out.

Quote: | Fighting game fans nowadays expect that fancy rollback netcode as the standard in the online fighters |
Quote: | Seriously though, releasing without that vaunted netcode |
You mean just regular actually functional online? That “fancy” netcode?
The netcode that has been completely standard in all western developed fighting games like Injustice 2 and Killer instinct since like early-mid 2010’s? That “vaunted” Netcode?
This was such a strange take to me. Especially when the review of course points out how bad the current online is immediately afterward. Good online in fighting games has been solved for ages now. It’s not “fancy”, it’s functional. As it should be.
Thank god the community rallied hard enough and Atlus actually listened because it was unacceptable that they were even thinking of re-releasing the game and not fixing the online.
I understand that Japanese devs have been extremely slow to transition because SF5 poisoned the well but takes like this confuse the heck outta me because they seem to imply that rollback is some new untested thing and calling it “vaunted” when it’s just standard is some real whacky stuff. And don’t get me wrong, I appreciate that the review rightfully lists the current state of the online as the clear negative it is and concludes on that note, but was this earlier stuff really needed?
