Should've released straight-into-video, aka OVA.
No matter how I see it, those black bars look soooo awkward Confused

So... I got carried away and read the whole manga so far. PLEASE give this anime a chance. It actually gets WAY, WAY better and DEFINITELY DOESN'T go the purely an excuse for tits route. It actually gets serious.

I wish there were a way that streaming platforms would be able to negotiate for the uncensored versions more often, having the standard broadcast version is pretty unfortunate in this case.

I've read through the manga and the above poster is correct, it gets much deeper than it appears in the beginning. Just give it a chance.

It's extremely boilerplate dystopian sci-fi that tries very hard to dupe people into buying it by pretending to be softcore porn, but is ultimately mediocre at both those things and doesn't have a single original thought or idea of its own.

So while it's true that it doesn't purely go for the tits route, the only reason I'd recommend it is either if you haven't experienced a single piece of dystopian fiction in your entire life, or if you want to marvel at how something with such a premise can turn out so spectacularly spineless.

Quote:
Reito Mizuhara is cryogenically frozen pending further medical advances, only to wake up 5 years later to a world in which a deadly and highly misandrist virus has all but wiped out the male population. Many struggles and societal upheavals followed, but luckily, a select few surviving men possess immunity to the disease—immunity which they can presumably confer to their offspring. Reito is the second of those chosen studs to be reanimated, and now the fate of the species relies on his ability and willingness to bone down harder than anybody has ever boned down before. A tale as old as time.

Did anyone else read this show’s premise and think, “oh, so it’s The Handmaid’s Tale, but with guys so it’s hilarious and fun instead of soul-breakingly horrifying”?

I'm 100 percent just going to wait for the blu ray release, but as a manga reader I'm very much looking forward to this review each week lol

I was thinking Y, the Last Man (comic) myself. It's always a nice premise I enjoy seeing explored.

Another title that occurred to me was A Boy and His Dog, a 1975 movie starring a very young Don Johnson and based on a 1969 Harlan Ellison novel, which somewhat used the same concept but in a much, much darker way.

Anyway, I like and agree with Steve's take on the series so far and look forward to further commentary on it.

There's already an uncensored version that you could get it on torrent.

I definitely won't be joining you on this journey, but I may click a review or two out of mild curiosity ahaha.

Man, I love reading this exact same comment for quite literally every single non-comedy titillation fanservice anime ever. There truly is a boobs anime out there for everyone. I used my card for that on Highschool DxD but it warms my heart to see newer people used there's on this title instead.

I'd hazard to say that there are many who didn't because you have to be old enough to remember that thing (1990). I could unpack how the two don't compare that well but won't for brevity. Maybe you are referring to the TV series that I didn't know existed until just now? Can't comment to that...

@ SigTheSauceMan and JustMonika(OK?) I hope you are right because I suspected as much could be the case after watching Ep2. A low effort porn show wouldn't need the dystopian angle and if they expand on that and/or explore the characters it could be good. But, dang is there a lot of fanservice...

Other things about the setup I found particularly obnoxious despite not being on the liberal spectrum is that with all the men gone, there are apparently no women who know technology well enough to keep advancing. They seem only able to operate the technology the guys created. Apparently, they can't organize a functional society and economy either because they all become destitute with the only possibility of upward mobility to get pregnant. Apparently they can't maintain buildings for some reason as well. And let's not mention that with guys gone, anarchy reined (why?) until the UW whipped the others into shape with a cadre of very un-feminine Women In Black. Hormones, amirite? Rolling Eyes And why would a secret kabal of women want to get rid of all the men, eliminate war or something? I guess I'll have to take Steve's advice and not think too much about this stuff...

We must be watching different shows because there was plenty of nudity and titillation in the one I watched...

It's nice to see someone else who appreciates the plot of High Scoll DxD. I think it helps that DxD started out as a light novel series, so it didn't have much opportunity to show a lot of titilation in the original source material.

a heavily (and hilariously) censored version on streaming platforms, further whittling any chance it might have had at titillating its target audience.

Target audience for this (esp. the domestic Japanese) will know this is the cue for them to buy the Blurays, which will definitely remove the censorship to reveal all its titillation glory.
Same goes for WEH's manga version (and its direct sequel).

For those interested, WEH also has 2 more franchise instalments, Fantasia and Britannia Lumiere. They share roughly the same themes, but have very different premises and characters. Has anyone here read them?

(Note: Fantasia is still ongoing, but Britannia Lumiere's ended early and inconclusively (presumably) due to author's health issues.)
