I clicked on this article to see which party he would be running on, and when I saw the LDP, I groaned. For people that don't know the LDP are basically the GOP or the Tories of Japan.

Disappointed, but not surprised to see he's one of those people.

At least the ideas he's talking about in the article are good.

So it sounds like he’s running on an anti-censorship platform. How well would that resonate over there? Anyone have any idea, because I have no idea how important that is to the rank and file voter.

Good to see someone like Akamatsu trying to do something to protect the freedom of expression at the higher level.
Let's hope he and others efforts can help Japan from attacks at freedom of expression like the ones that been happening recently in the West. Artists should be able do draw and write what they want any way they want without having to be subject to censorship by people that are not even going to read or watch their works.

Running as part of the Liberal Democratic Party will give him a really good chance of been elected given how dominant this party is in Japan, just winning again the lower house of the Diet by a vast majority last October .

He's been a huge advocate for creator rights and freedom of expression. To be fair, most artists are, since going against that would be working against your own self-interest which wouldn't be very smart.

I wish him luck.

Has the anime industry considered using foreign voice actors fluent in Japanese (OK, probably not too many out there) for portraying foreigners? Probably not an issue in the home market, but hearing a character who is from the USA in the anime speaking with a heavily accented English is jarring* to a native English speaker.

*Such as Cindy Campbell in Ika Musume (Squid Girl).

Osamu Tezuka's manga had quite a few discriminatory expressions, but it's standard in Japan to leave an explanatory note about that while preserving the work as it was in the past.

It is a standard not just in Japan, man, not just in Japan.

I am curious to which wing of the LDP he will be part of, as the LDP is a fairly large tent-party with multiple factions. It is well-known that Japan has a low political engagement public. So I guess good for him? Even if I don't necessarily agree with him on every point he raises.

Fun fact: It's the Communist Party of Japan that most stands against censorship.

honestly these mostly sound like non issues. Removing or changing certain elements won't kill anyone, it's not gonna be a slippery slope, it's not gonna lead to changing entire stories from the ground up to fit propaganda

I don't think taking the GOP and comparing it to a center-right party in Asia or Europe is an apt comparison. Political scientists have compared the GOP and it is more akin to far-right populist parties than mainstream right-wing parties.

Wow! This is really great news. Having a artist in this field will really put things in perspective.
