Seems like a lot of whining then if the other store is allowed to sell those products in that location. Seems pretty horrible that the police and the other store can harass them like this.
I'm assuming that if the police found anything illegal, the store wouldn't be reopening so soon. I checked the NSFW link for their site, and I can understand the concern in theory. Can any of that be seen from outside the store? It seems ridiculous to make a big deal out of a porn store being in proximity to a place teen girls go to when a lot of stores they are likely to visit have porn corners shoved in the back of the same store. |

Ironic that a store named, Spank! that caters towards teenage girls is shop up in arms angry about Mandrake's new storefront. |

Seriously, that's far more problematic. |

Mandarake takes up so much of Nakano Broadway that I wouldn't be surprised if they just swap this specialized storefront with another one that they occupy, in a less questionable location.

Yeah, talk about irony. But Spank! is a brand of colorful 80's Pop fashion so they probably chose that name because of the "impact". Now, about Mandrake. They have many stores (more than 20) on that complex so they could have chose a better place for their adult store. Like using one of their stores that are not near places where young teens and children usually go. There are a place for that stores but is not next to a store here teens and children would gather. |

I saw the photos, but you could clearly see stuff marked “rape” from the door. |

If you check Spank!'s twitter, they posted a photo of the exterior of the Mandarake storefront taken from inside their shop. https://twitter.com/Spank_love/status/1431468296222564353?s=20 There's no visible genitalia as far as I can tell, but it definitely feels iffy to me, and I'm pretty far from prudish. If you've never been to Nakano Broadway, the hallways are not particularly spacious, which aggravates the situation. Also, I have to admit that I'm a bit puzzled by your comment on "porn corners." I've been to a decent number of shops in Japan, and the only one I can think of that sells adult goods as well as products that teen girls would want is Don Quijote. IIRC they keep their adult sections curtained off, so it's very easily avoided if you don't wish to be exposed to it. I guess there's also doujinshi stores, but again they tend to keep the outwardly explicit stuff curtained off. Gravure photobooks and magazines are certainly accessible in mainstream bookstores and the like, but I wouldn't personally classify those as porn, nor are they usually displayed in such an in-your-face manner. (In the interest of transparency, I have shopped at Spank! several times and follow their social media accounts. However, I've also shopped at Mandarake and purchased adult goods from various shops in Japan, so it's not as if I'm on some sort of anti-Mandarake or anti-sex crusade.) |

It may help people understand part of the fuss to realize that the two shops aren't "across the street" from one another, but are actually "across the hall" --- and it may not even be a wide pedestrian-mall sort of hallway, but more like a wide corridor in a regular building.

Ohhh, actually that does make a lot more sense. I was envisioning something closer to an American mall or like an outlet mall (which, yeah, seems silly given space constraints in Japan, but that's just where my mind is conditioned to go.) Thinking of this more like your neighbor across the hall in an apartment building definitely makes things a lot clearer about why this would be an issue of visibility and location, especially since adult content in shared spaces is apparently cordoned off according to posters who have actually been to Japan. |

FYI most of the pictures that come up first when you search "nakano broadway interior" are of the more spacious hallways, whereas Spank! and the majority of the shops in the complex are in more cramped hallways like this one:
Edit: Actually, I realized that Spank! is in an even narrower hallway than the one in the picture above. I can't find any photos of that specific hallway, but you can sort of tell from this map of the fourth floor. (It's a pink-colored shop towards the bottom of the map.) Also, here's a photo of the entirety of Spank! for some additional context: It's basically the size of a (not particularly large) bedroom. This isn't really a store where once you're past the entrance it's easy to ignore what's outside. |

The tweet mentions that the corridor between the two stores is only about 1m 95cm wide. And yeah, if you look at the photo, you can see categories for "rape" and "sukatoro" (look it up yourself) on the shelves. The tweet also says that most of their customers are teenage girls and families who bring their children along, so I can definitely understand their concern being so close to an adult shop.
FYI, Spank! opened in 2004 and moved to Nakano Broadway in 2014, so they've been at this location for a while. |

I've always thought it was just a misspelling of the word "spunk" since the Japanese pronunciation is "supanku." |
