How great of an export is anime/manga for Japan anyway? Anyone got any figures?

Nice, this is a very cool project. Not knowing Japanese, I currently have to rely on those terrible free web translators. This database should make things so much easier, so I'm sure I'll be using it once it goes live.

Excellent! What an invaluable resource.

I wonder if this could possibly make any impact on the industry. Bootleggers will have one less excuse-- that they can't import legitimately because they can't navigate Japanese sites (of course, this depends on the product or languages that the product comes in).

(Too bad nothing can be done to alleviate some of the terrible markup and shipping fees for imports...)

How stellar! I'm looking forward to seeing how this will turn out, and what impact--indeed, if any--it might have on the exportation of Japanese shows, both by consumers and by companies. Well, at the very least, it'll be interesting to peruse the database for fun. =)

Will we be able to use it, or is it only for companies?

They ought to set up an auction site for all the unlicensed series. Set a reserve for the lowest acceptable bid and see if anyone is willing to bite for a license. If a show is really popular you could see some nice bidding wars. And if a show doesn't spark any interest, the license holders could reduce their reserve to a more reasonable level.

I would say its for the companies............ its just a facility for the japanese to earn more from the overseas market... more unknown titles will be licenced in the future I assumed....

Awsemo! It's great to have a central database with infallible figures and statistics. This will probably lead to an increase in exports I imagine

Don't they know about the ANN Encyclopedia? They could just add their phone numbers to each entry and they're all set, for crying out loud.

Or they could just use the IMDB. From the description it sounds like the Japanese database is going to contain much beyond what's in the ANN encyclopedia.

Last I heard Japan is the world's second largest producer and exporter of entertainment. By value the Asian market is larger than the Western market, but they're clearly seeing considerable potential for growth in the west. As some people like to point out, the only thing wrong with geeks and nerds is that they spot trends unfashionably early.
