i hear all these announcements once in a while : Astro Boy Princess knight Kimba is licensed for this and that online service but as long as it's just the English edited versions again it's why the hell bother...
I'm not even talking about that i want a subbed version for the sake of it, it's the fact these English versions have terrible acting and in the case of Astro Boy 89 episodes or missing and they are edited... editing and the script is the biggest problem with the english versions Princess Knight and Kimba the white lion. Also the footage they used for the second dvd set Princess Knight is terrible at times i'm sure the Japanese masters would look much better . Talk about English version been waiting forver for a release of the Amazing 3 if they release that it would be really great but i know nobody ofically has these episodes anymore although at least 30 of them are online on some places on the internet... When it comes to 60's Astro Boy a few japanese episodes are on the rightstuff DVD's but other then that sporadic attemps have been made the sub some episodes but most of them still aren't... For a re-watch of te 60's astro boy i would really like to have all the episodes in Japanese subtitled i also mean the episodes that have technically an English version cause like I said the English product of it sucks. Also with some 15 episodes of this English version you can barely even hear what's going on cause the original masters where even destroyed and 5 of those are even recordings that some kinds made with tape recorders in the 60's... |

I think the reason for this is because the English edited version is the only one the licensors have available. It'd probably be a somewhat time-consuming process for the licensors of the Astro Boy shows to go back and sub all the Japanese episodes. They might also have to deal with getting certain elements of the Japanese versions cleared for international streaming, such as English-translated lyrics of the theme songs. Of course, it's not impossible for the licensor to produce an English subbed version. There just needs to be enough fan demand to make that task worthwhile. |

Yet i have all the Japanese DVD boxsets so I'm the kinda person that would pay good money for these translations. Hell by biggest motivation for learning Japanese is being into Osamu Tezuka. When I finally master Japanese I can have a good laugh at the English industry... |

Looking forward to Princess Knight and Galaxy Angel (that one may have not aged well if my memory serves me right). On another note RetroCrush is slowly becoming my favorite streaming service. I attribute this mainly however being tired of the Isekai fad going on. |

I know that Japan has a problem with that but as i own all Japanese boxsets of Tezuka anime (and live action stuff etc) that have actually been released i can confirm for these things that's not the problem. The reason they woudn't release it subtitled is because it would cost money to make these translations ... something they don't think will be worthwhile... I don't think Discotek's release of the 1969 Dororo anime in black and white did all that well... And i suspect some of these companies look at each other and go like you go ahead and do that good luck. |

If you enjoy 2000s anime comedy, Galaxy Angel holds up better than most. If you enjoyed it then, you probably still will. RetroCrush has definitely won my love as well. I desperately hope they'll get Ashita no Joe 2 on there one day also (I just like their player better than CR), but it's otherwise stellar. Been really enjoying City Hunter without having to blind buy the whole franchise. I'm definitely looking forward to the Tezuka stuff (only own the Princess Knight sets). |

I still wish we could get a subbed stream of the 2003 Astro Boy anime at some point. Even if it was dub only that would be fine but the 2003 version just doesn't to be streaming anywhere anymore.

The Japanese masters for the Astro Boy shows (along with other older Tezuka anime) actually aren't lost. They're available on various streaming services in Japan, such as U-Next.
Maybe RetroCrush will eventually add the 2003 series. |

You made me do a double take because I swear that version streamed on almost everything at one point. But you're right! It doesn't appear to be on anything digitally except for purchase on Amazon. If you're truly desperate, you can get the dub for under $20 on DVD several places, though (some even have it for $10). At least it's not also out of print. |

As I recall, all episodes of Astro Boy still exist in audio form (similar to Doctor Who's situation), but episodes 125, 127, and 139 have had their visuals lost and were represented on the Japanese DVDs with the audio playing over still images. On a side note, the Japanese master for episode 34, "Midoro Marsh", definitely doesn't exist anymore as its destruction was ordered by Tezuka himself, who was greatly displeased with the final product (it was their first time outsourcing to a different studio, as Tezuka wanted to give his own animators a vacation). But, thankfully, a copy had already been made and sent to the US for dubbing; So when a recording of the Japanese audio was located decades later, they spliced it on top of the dub footage to restore the episode. |

If you're interested, you can get a dub-only DVD set of the complete series for $16.99. |

Just finished Galaxy Angel and it was good. However they have not added Z or the Sub for the first series.
