Fight me!  Jacks are what you insert plugs into. She has a jack in her spine. Initially, Echo plugged the amp into that jack, but later it appears that the cable (which turned into an electrical arc?) is a male/male connector that plugs into both her back jack and the amp's output jack (input? - their relationship still isn't clear to me at all, so I hope you do fight me on this!). Once it's plugged in, the plug seems to remain in her back even when there's no power from the amp. And from a present tech pov, it appears that it's a mono TS plug, i.e. it only has a tip conductor, a sleeve conductor, and one insulating band. You can't get stereo without at least one ring conductor. TS plugs are usually used for guitars and such, and need to use short cables to avoid external noise. Maybe that's why the Players are picking up voices from the Earless.
Source What I didn't understand was what happened when the van fell off the train trestle. Rather than plug the amp into her back jack, Mu handed him something that glowed when they touched hands and bam, instant flying robot. How did that happen? And why was she surprised when they could fly in episode 3? The continuity was lacking during the Top Boost sequence too. At one point we see a top and bottom jack on the amp, with a dial switch pointed at the bottom one. Echo pulls out the plug (which doesn't seem to cut off the robot's transformation?), then apparently jams it back into the same jack. When we see it later, it is still in the same bottom jack, but the switch is now pointed to the vacant top jack, which seems counter-intuitive as to what it's indicating. I know I'm not supposed to be paying that close attention and that how this all works will likely never be explained, but I was because of the above fight challenge, and the animators should be too. 
Anyway, I'm enjoying it, Eureka Seven flashbacks and all. It's not my favorite series of the season, but it'll do for now, since almost everything else is on hold. |

So episode 4 aired and they namedropped the Prince lookalike. Denka. His name is Denka. Of course it is.

YUP. Funimation subtitled the trailer for the series where they name a ton of the characters and it's full of stuff like that. Pri- sorry, Denka's posse is just straight up named Wendy & Lisa. There's also Roz who I am almost certain is meant to be the anime girl version of Axl Rose. |

I didn't get that bit at the end of ep 3 where Echo was shocked to find out Nir was a girl. At no point in that episode was Nir ever presented as a boy.
I'm pretty sure everyone in the audience assumed Nir was a girl from the start and nothing in the episode suggested that Echo thought she was a boy |

From the get go, Echo behaved very differently with Mu than he does with Nir. On top of that, he added "kun" to her name several times which is odd to say the least. That he had misunderstood something was pretty clear startig around Nir's second blush. |

I think I must have missed that. I don't think it even occurred to me that anyone could think Nir was a boy so I never noticed. |

It's probably because Nir is a "boku" girl. Using the masculine pronoun to refer to herself could potentially cause confusion. |

Nir's also voiced by Rie Kugimiya who's played both young boy and girl roles - including playing a pair of fraternal twins in Blood Blockade Battlefront's first season. Also in the subtitles Hole only refers to her as "that one" when not using her name, so there's definitely meant to be some ambiguity to Nir's character for most of the episode. |

So I'm still in the dark about the relationship between the Player and the Equipment and the amp. When Nir flew off at the end, I wondered if she took off with Echo's amp, but nope. So where was she getting the power?
Is the Player the guitar or the speaker, or both (is that what the woofers on Mu's hips are for?)? Does the Equipment only need the amp to manifest and after that it's on its own? That doesn't seem to be the case, exactly. I am confoozled.

Nir had her own amp: the black one that was originally in the student council room. Earlier when she used Echo's amp, it seemed she was trying to see if it felt any different to use someone else's amp, but she crashed, the amp transformed back, and she ran off without it. Hole brought the black amp with him to the pool. |

If you ask me, when a show has to resort to name-dropping and references to popular figures or shows to keep people's interest or entice them to like the show instead of the actual characters and plot, it is a failure in the writing department. On top of that, if the show consistently has nonsense happen (like the "amps" and "robots" and hallucinations) and doesn't try to explain but expects the audience to accept "it's rock and roll baby" it's failing on a conceptual level. And these are the dividing line between this, E7 and even FLCL which some like to use for comparisons (not counting using style reference to those for the aforementioned purpose). One might as well say DitF is just like Eva....

Strong disagree. Overexplaining stuff that isn't supposed to be anything other than cool, fun nonsense has ruined more series than it has saved. Not everything needs a grounded, thoroughly explained fake-science/magic physics system. I don't really need to know how an amp can transform into a robot, nor how its components relate or what are the magitech rules that allow the Player and Equipment to connect. I don't care that one Players needs to use levers, while the next uses a pedal and another just yells, the show won't be any better for explaining it - but it might be worse by wasting time doing so. |
