This is my favorite show of this season. Love the comedy and the melancholy is expertly wielded, as well.

Really enjoying this so far. Though I don't get why he can't just change at the office... Hopefully we get an appropriately absurd explanation at some point

I think that while SHAFT would've definitely made it more interesting to look at, Ajia do still manages to do a good job at adapting the manga. There's a lot of stuff that got cut to make the comedy flow better in the anime format, so there's still a lot of fun to have from reading the source material.

That was a really nice review of Sayonara, Zetsubou Sensei (mentioned 17 times)! Hopefully, from here on out we'll get reviews of Kakushigoto (20 name drops).
I really related to Episode 3. Growing up, I always had the impression that we were poor, and while we weren't rich, I'm pretty sure we were not as impoverished as I thought.  But I always felt like it was my job to not spend money and to take care of my parents, who really didn't need me to take care of them. So Hime's behavior felt very realistic to me.
I love the art style and pretty much everything else, but I'm kinda dreading finding out the story of the framing vignettes... |

SHAFT in Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and Ajiado in Kakushigoto, each in their own way manage to capture the strength of Kumeta's graphic style, with bold color and stylized character designs backed by beautiful layouts.
The choice of image for the episode 4 review was highly appropriate. I'm fascinated by the framing story, including the subtle little hints at it in the main parts of the episodes (such as: paying a contractor to reproduce your house --- down to the appearance of age and decrepitude --- in a different city). Thanks for the CEO explanation. I was wondering what was going on there. |

I was thinking Hime could draw the rocks with the tiger's eyes shining in the dark cave, but she did me one better. I liked her insistence that she didn't imagine it, that's what the tiger saw. I'm also really enjoying how grounded she is, despite her crazy-ass hyper dad.

So a man not wanting to have sex with another man makes him homophobic? And now every kind of medium is forbidden from making this kind of joke? This part of the review is ridiculous.

It could be. But in this case, it's a joke about awkwardly accidental quasi-sexual situations against a backdrop of actual sexual abuse in some power arrangements in the entertainment industry which just happens to be gay. I thought the show explicitly avoided the homophobic implication by making it clear it was about sleeping to the top. If that's still unacceptable, then the rule really is "negative connotations related to sex must be limited to straight characters."

I didn't feel like the joke with Kakeru was gay panic so much as simply sexual-harassment panic, which I thought worked ok, since only a few minutes earlier we had Kakushi freaking out over the possibility of a sexual-harassment accusation ending up in the tabloids because his female assistant was in a bathrobe. So to me, the stage had been set for that joke, which didn't really depend on Kakeru being male. It did depend on it being Kakeru though, who is a shy and timid lad who freaks out about everything.
I also get where Steve's coming from about Nadila, but since she's always portrayed as being 100% calm and collected and kind, I don't have a problem with them milking cultural differences for some humor. I don't see anything mean-spirited or xenophobic about it, so as long as that remains the case, I'm ok with it. Lol at the jab at Amazon re one envelope in a huge box. I guess that's a worldwide problem, huh. I'm not sure whether Hime's little chart was listing her duties or listing things she didn't like to do but had to, but either way, I'm kinda distressed that "Lunch" was on the list. Eating lunch is a duty? Or something she'd rather not do? I wonder why. |

I think that was "lunch duty" --- along the lines of serving classroom lunch (which I've seen in other anime) or lunchtime cleanup. |

Speaking of the bathrobe tabloid joke, before the 'sleep with me (Kakushi) to get ahead' joke I was actually expecting to see the same tabloid joke, but with Kakeru this time, so I appreciate it going a different route. I think that duty list was for class duties, one of which would be serving lunch (to other students). |

Ok. I guess I'm used to thinking they all brought bentos, which wouldn't require much if any cleanup (and everyone should clean up after themselves!), at least until high school, which might or might not have a cafeteria to buy food at.

I also don't see it as homophobic, the joke here wasn't out of nowhere like in "Wave, listen to me" which I also like but that part not so much, it was natural consequence of Goto being afraid of heterosexual misunderstanding situation and in his relief running straight into homosexual misunderstanding situation. The fact that Kakeru went for "I don't want to sleep to the top" explanation further diffuses the "gay panic" aspect.
I don't know why Steve said she's from "unspecified country", maybe the anime didn't say it clearly enough but she's from Indonesia just like the background drawing outsourced artist from same episode she debuted in, and according to some Reddit user the bomb reference has sadly lot of sense: https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/gawsg4/kakushigoto_episode_5_discussion/fp8i70f/
Most characters in Kakushiugoto don't have much character anyway and are pretty one-sided, so I don't think she's lacking compared to others. Kakushigoto barely have any really developed characters beside the father-daughter pair. The Hime inside box fort was terrifyingly cute. |

Hey, between this and Monthly Nozaki-kun, does it seems that mangakas like to make fun of worse-than-useless editors that just get in the way? I wonder if there is some industry-wide conflict at work here .
