I actually prefer Zombie Powder over Bleach. The comedy relief in this one-shot doesn't seem as forced as it does in Bleach, and there's an actual goal.

Just how "unfinished" is this series? Did it die in the middle of a an arc or did it just die before closing all it's plot lines?
I'm a little curious to see what this is like, since I like Bleach and I'm actually intrigued by the idea of comedy torture.
I wonder if Kubo will ever take the time, say after Bleach is through, to pen a conclusion. It probably bothers him just a little that he couldn't finish it back then. Or even a total redo, correcting his past errors.

It died at the end of an arc with very little explained.

That not true at all. It ended with everything that needed to be done at the time. They got Wolfina's brother to the doctor to get the ring of the dead removed, and then Gamma decided that he would leave Elwood and just continue on his journey with Smith. If there was a next chapter it would have Gamma and Smith together there, just wasn’t.

Well they're both pretty much the definition of mediocrity in my book, but if I had to pick one Bleach was interesting in the beginning, and I though Ichigo was one of the better shonen leads I've seen in a while. Still, neither are anything special.

Kagemusha: Bleach has its moments. It's just that it's a tad mean-spirited and misogynistic for my tastes.

Both are exelent manga, in my opinion. I prefer bleach, but zombie powder being something Kubo did in High School, I respect it to. It is very good for something written and illistrated in 11th grade, wouldn't you agree.

Well he had "mental problems" while writing it, so maybe it's not something he would wanna go back to. Besides, I would find it extremely odd for a cancelled Jump series to be restarted years later. Although, there are many Bleach/ZP fans who think it would've been better than Bleach had it continued(I used to think that too, but Bleach has grown on me way too much!).
As for the ending, it's somewhat satisfying, but it's obvious that it was a rush job, the main goal of the story (finding the rings of the dead) was nowhere near completed, but it's a fun ride while it lasts, especially for Bleach fans.
I've always been curious if he's used any ideas in Bleach he didn't get to do in ZP.
edit: 11th grade?? Where did you hear this? I'm almost sure that's wrong, he was probably in his early 20s at best.

Thank you for allowing me to bring up something I've been meaning to comment on for a while.
If memory serves, ZP is rated 13+. As is Yu Yu Hakusho. Recently I've noticed in many VIZ publications that are rated 13+ allow quite a bit of graphic violence but to say "damn" puts the series from 13+ to 16+.
I've never read ZP so I don't know how graphic it gets but, on recomendation, I did read Black Cat volume 1. The book was rated 16+ but the violence was mild, there were three potentially objectional words at most. Alcohol references were few to none and sexual and drug references were nonexistant. The plot itself is unlikley to appeal to anyone over the age of 16, so why rate it 16+?
Recent volumes of Yu Yu Hakusho have had no language whatsoever, minimal alcohol and tabaco use and less sexual reference that they have language. The violence, however, has had it's stronger moments (Chapter 89). Whether or not it constitutes a 16+ is arguable, but I can hardly understand why VIZ treats violence so lightly while all the other vices are treated as such attrocities.

Well, that's because Americans on a whole are more desensitized to violence than to sex or anything else, while that is the complete opposite in other places like in Europe (not sure about Japan, but I would hazard a guess that they lean close to the "Europe side" of things in this respect). It really makes no sense, though. Which is worse, killing people or swearing and having some sexual references?
Anyway, back on topic to Zombie Powder, I wouldn't expect it to get excellent reviews, you know, because it was cancelled and all. I love Bleach, but the Zombie Powder preview a while ago in Shonen Jump didn't seem to "jump" as much, for what it's worth.

Hmm, thanks for the info crow-kun. Might pick this one up at some point.
About the ratings issue: Why can't we just have a detail based rating instead of a general one? Sort of like what you saw at one time in gaming magazines where there's a scale for Violence, Language, and Sex/Nudity. (Don't know if they still do this as I haven't read a gaming magazine in years.)
The whole age based system just seems silly to me. If each volume had an individual content rating, it would make things a lot easier. At least it would if the system had the same standard for all titles.
I've always had a problem with how things are made age-specific over here, like there's something wrong with you if you're an older person reading a book, playing a game, or watching a TV show that's for a lower age range.
Isn't this what makes people turn into bitter and angry adults? They thought "oh, I'm too old for these" and threw away all their favorite childhood toys and such? Or, worse, their parents decided they were "too old?"

I agree. I read Zombie Powder before Bleach and really enjoy it over Bleach...

As a 21-22-year-old, he must have been the oldest 2nd-year student in his high school!
Sarcasm aside, that information (which has been widely repeated) just isn't true. Kubo's first short story was published several months after his high school graduation, and Zombie Powder started a couple years later.
