To the rant:

And there are self-declared know-it-all veterans as well, who have read hundreds of series but still make the same kinds of generalizations. (As in, the hundreds of series they read are only one genre, etc.)

Elitist n00bs can be self-righteous and annoying, but elitist veterans just as much so. I know the rant's author isn't targeting all n00bs, but I think she fails to consider that many veterans are just the same or worse.

I at least agree with the rant that anyone who likes anime can call themselves an anime fan. I never particularly enjoyed hearing "You're not a true anime fan if you haven't bought X amount of DVDs/watched Y number of anime/Watched Show Z".

I agree quite a bit with the author, I, very recently, got into a fight with two friends because I said that in my opinion naruto was juvinile (sp?) and that the target audience is 12-17 and because of that, they insisted that most of whaty i like (ie; Ghost in the shell, Paranoia agent, gantz and some of Leiji matsumoto's work (which, admitedly, I'm a fan of)) sucked. The didn't say "I dont like it" they came out and said it sucks. They called matsumoto's work childish (which, also admittidly, it can be) and insisted that Paranoia Agent was an oversexualized piece of crap(granted, there is sex, but it's not exessive). I tried top ephisize the "my opinion is my opinion and yours is yours; to each his own" as well as the fact that "You guys [the friends] are in the target demographic so there's nothing wrong with liking it" but they insisted on insaulting my opinions because of that minor difference. The conversation ended with "goodbye forever".

I'll leave you guys to relate that to the rant, suffice to say though, it is related.

I stopped watching the horrible naruto filler some time ago and as it stands right now I couldn't care less if they finish it (yes I purchased the uncut box so don't start). I understand that the filler is somewhat necessary to make sure that popularity doesn't wane while more (quality) episodes are being produced but why does the filler have to be so bad? The current story arc in bleach is a fantastic bit of lore that ties in perfectly with the ongoing manga story without trampling on the creators ideas or becoming so obnoxious that I can't stand to watch anymore.

Beet the vandel buster managed to sneak little 4 or 5 episode stories in between arcs that managed to flesh out the characters as well as entertain. My point is, if you're going to do it do it right. Show some respect for your property and the fans will come.

I know what you're talking about all too well. It annoys me to no end when people don't have the maturity to admit that something they like isn't a work of art, and that something they don't like might have been at the very least "innovative". Now, of course there's no arguing taste, but no matter how you look at it there are some movies and series that have real artistic merits and some that are really nothing more than simple entertainment. I like several shows that fall into the later category, and I can admit it, and there are plenty of shows that I don't like that I can take a step back and say, "Yeah, I guess that is a good show, even if it's not to my tastes."

And good column, Zac. How many Naruto filler questions do you get? Man.... xD

It was a shame, really; had they just put the show on hiatus for a year (or, god forbid, went into reruns for a few months at a time like US TV shows) they wouldn't have gone spiralling into stupidity like that.

So Japan doesn't do reruns? I thought they didn't, but this put me in doubt.

I have a feeling it's a culture thing if they don't.

Also, Viz hasn't announced a release date yet for the Uncut Box Set 2. I'd imagine they're waiting to see what sales are like for the first one... so for god's sake, buy it if you're a fan of the show. I can't stress that enough.

From Viz panel at AX06:
2nd uncut box set - 12/5/06 - eps 14-25, 3 discs, Extras not yet known.
Also they said "1st uncut set is almost sold out at this point", but I did not write down the context of that (if they meant at the con or if the first pressing was sold out or what).

They don't do reruns in the American sense, but sometimes they'll re-air a show. Otherwise, for the most part, an episode of a show will be aired once and then that's it.

Wow! I hadn't realized Naruto had gotten so bad.

What I'm worried about is what will happen over here once we get to that point in the dub. I hear that the Japanese actually like it (which boggles my mind), but that might have been a while back. I don't see the filler as doing so hot on Toonami, though. Maybe we'll be able to just pretend it never happened over here. I hope...

I guess that would explain why they can charge so much for anime over there...

Someone actually made a flash cartoon in response to the filler.

As for the Dreamworks buy-out, I'm surprised you can still find Innocence and Millennium Actress on dvd. Though Keith at the Manga booth said something about trying to bring the dubs for both shows stateside.

There's also a website, Jumptheshark.com where you can weigh in on when various TV series have jumped the shark and see others' opinions. Unfortunately, they don't have non-U.S. series on the site.

I just have to say, wtf??

From what I've heard, Naruto fans are getting increasingly upset with the quality of the show. Most recently, there was an explosion of laughter and disappointment at an episode of Naruto that features the lead character turning into a girl and then peeing all over Ino in an extended "comedy" sequence that was basically just gross and a total waste of time rather than being actually funny or interesting.
Is this for real? When did Naruto turn into entertainment for fans of hardcore w/s porn? EDIT: Skimmed through the episode on a friend's comp and saw the awful truth...those events sooo sounds like something that somebody would make up as an illustration of how bad the fillers are, but it seems like reality has trumped imagination here Crying or Very sad Twisted Evil Honestly, I was just about to roll my eyes at "yet another Naruto filler question," but this answer was pretty good. I also like this one from another site:
Quote:
End of filler epsiodes

Comment: When will the current filler episodes end? When will the story get back the main line? thanks for the help.

Answer A: The fillers are scheduled next week. After that there will be a four episode Kakashi Gaiden arc, followed by a reanimation of the opening, and new ending animation. This information was received by us about four weeks ago from our sources inside Pierrot.

Answer B: Did you know that [group name removed] doesn't animate, design, contribute , or have any direct contact of any kind with the people responsible for Naruto? Well, It's true. We have no idea when the filler ends, no idea why they have chosen to do so much filler, and in general the staff doesn't like the filler (there are some exceptions to this).
However, if there is adaptable material in the manga, they can avoid a Kenshin-like demise by going back to it if the ratings go too far down.
Quote:
That said, Haruhi Suzumiya is a massively popular show in Japan with a devoted fanbase here in America and it is something of a phenomenon, but if you look at the show - and a lot of fans will agree with me on this - it doesn't really have broad appeal to American fans. The guys who watch Naruto and Bleach might wind up scratching their heads at it and there isn't a lot in it for the females.
Mad Hey, I watch Bleach and Naruto, and I wasn't scratching my head at Melancholy~ ! (J/k, I know what you're getting at here.) I'm confident that Melancholy~ (that's my abbreviation, and I'm sticking to it!) will get a good-quality release and dub from someone at some point, but due to its eccentricity and lack of action & obvious fanservice (yeah, there's some, but it's no Love Hina), it won't be as popular with the overall fan community as it is with the hardcore sector. Out of the hardcore fans who like the series, though, I think most liked it enough to put it in the "worth buying" category, as opposed to the "worth downloading, but not buying" category.
(I always like to comment on stuff outside the rant, in order to balance out the large amount of discussion that centers on the rants...)

Out of total curiosity, what's the episode number for this one?

A painfully unfunny flash cartoon.

Glad to see that this week's Answerman was missing "how to break into the industry" questions. Anyway! Why does the author, of the RANT, allow those people to get under her skin? This is what I do when I see those "noobs" sitting on the floor at Waldens...I walk past them and grab the manga that appeals to me. Its so simple!!! They can roll their eyes and sigh all they want.

That would be 192, that just aired last week. It's funny for a moment, but then you're like.....yeah...

That flash is alright, but it really wasn't that funny.... Confused

That site needs a massive update in several areas. I mean, they don't have an update page, and like you said, none of the Anime shows (They don't even have Cowboy Bebop).
