I caught up on the show over the weekend and was so happy to hear his voice again!

BUT WHY?!

I mean, I love Ume-chan, I'm very happy that he's back and working again, and I wish he could have performed this role from the start, but he didn't, this character was played by Maeno from the start of the show. And he not only sounds nothing like Umehara, his version of the character is also different from Umehara's (going by the game, anyway).

Because it was supposed to be his role from the start? He will most likely re-record all of the lines for the home video release anyway so there’s no reason for him not to jump back into the anime if he can.

I wasn't intending to watch this anime, but I might actually reconsider that decision...

It was supposed to be his role but it wasn't. And they already got a replacement, one that sounds nothing like him and acts the character nothing like Umehara would have done (and indeed does, in the game). And now they're getting Umehara on for the last what, 4 episodes? Generally I vastly prefer Umehara to Maeno, but seriously. Have Umehara to replace Maeno for the video release if they want to, but to apply such a change in the middle of airing, have these people heard of consistency?

(Generally this is just more headscratching that this Umehara situation is leaving me with. Having him replaced with people like Maeno and Sugita was weird from the start. When Kamiya Hiroshi had an accident and couldn't play Takemoto for the last episode of Honey & Clover they replaced him with Nojima Kenji who at the very least sounded similar and could act like him. Here, though...)

The Sugita thing doesn’t bother me as much because, in my personal opinion at least, that role could have easily been his from the beginning in terms of character type. Anime hyper I’m still of the mind that Shimazaki is probably closest to Umehara in terms of voice, however, so I’m surprised he was never used as a replacement.

There was the similar situation in FGO mobage - Taneda Risa left project because of illness and Rieri replaced her. But Rieri is still represent role of Mashu even after Risa recovery, because it would be kinda... disrespectful to Rieri, don't you think so? At least people at type-moon and delight works think so and because of that they haven't change Mashu's VA back - it would be humiliating to Rieri as professional seiyu.

I totally get that! However, I feel like that’s a little different because Mash is a major character whereas Ieyasu has only had a handful of lines so far in the anime. Either way, I’m sure there were several discussions about him returning and Maeno stepping back before it ever happened. I love them both, and I was happy to hear them both in the role.

I'm no fan of Umehara but I think it would've been best if they let him rest for a while. Coming back for the remaining 4 episodes is just plain incoherent.
