Shirobako had this briefly happen with Episode 6, which had extensive references to Tomino's Space Runaway Ideon as "Idepon." (It also had a few other references.) It was temporarily suspended from streaming but then came back. The common assumption is that it was Tomino that caused it, but there were other theories.

Gintama had two episodes that were taken out from the dvd/bluray-release, if I remember correctly. Both were making some fun on the expense of politicians that were visible in the local media at the time of the censored episode's original run... The second one included a bit more....uhh... Salt to the bleeding wound- kind of jabs at the famous politician who embezzled huge amounts of money(only to spend it on onsen trips and women or something like that), which inevitably lead to a hearing, in which he started crying aloud and hitting the table. Gintama pretty much had a merry time rendering the infamous press conference into a good opening sequence to a new season...

Wish they included continuing series in the Spring 2018 OP survey. Black Clover and Clear Card have pretty catchy openings...

Oh, it still exists... Just not legally. And my top Spring 2018 OP by far is Black Clover #3. |

I wonder if episode 1 will appeaer in Viz Medias release, I think heard that it was cut from the Australian release, but Viz may try getting it, and it could be why it is taking such a long time for them to get back to us on this.

A note on Psycho-Pass New Edit. When they edited season 1 and aired it as New Edit in 2014, they combined two 22-minute episodes and turned it into a 45-minute episode with some new footage. So New Edit is 11 episodes long, with each episode running for 45 minutes.
Episode 4 of New Edit = Ep 7 and Ep 8 of season 1 that aired in 2012. Ep 7 and 8 (or Ep 4 of New Edit) deals with a case where a female student at an all-girls' school murdered her schoolmates and turned their bodies into gruesome works of art. That was the reason Ep 4 of New Edit did not air on TV at the time. |

Another series that was affected by censorship, IIRC was Pokémon. I can remember at least two times that episodes were censored, or downright removed.

Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water was also censored in a rebroadcast on NHK, airbrushing Nadia's nipples out of a brief nude scene.
It's interesting how much stricter Japan's gotten on nudity over the years. Whenever I think of Japanese TV censorship, one of the first things that comes to mind is Freezing (maybe just because it was one of the first examples of broadcast censorship I saw via screenshots), in which the entire screen was black at times. |

There's an episode featuring the Pokémon Whiscash that never aired in Japan during the Advanced era. The episode teaser from the previous episode is the only footage that has ever been shown anywhere for it. Whiscash was going to heavily use the move Earthquake in the show, but then a catastrophic earthquake hit the country and they decided to shelve the episode, considering it in poor taste to air at the time. It never re-aired at a later time, and it never aired in other countries. There was also a two-parter in the Black and White era involving a Team Rocket and Team Plasma plot that similarly involved earthquakes, tsunamis, and the like. They were also never aired because the 2011 quake hit the week before they were to air. It was kind of awkward at the time since they were plot-important and they had to write around what happened in later episodes and retcon. Those're just unaired, but the banned ones happened more on the Western front. I'm still confused why the edited for tv version of "Beauty and the Beach" can't be on any of the home releases. It's ridiculously short, but it does exist. Last edited by Triltaison on Sun Apr 29, 2018 4:30 pm; edited 1 time in total |
