Their other departments not to bad either.
I do think they rely to heavily on their digital department, you can overproduce something, which was why I did not like Night as much as Zero.

Thanks for this interview. Had a lot of run reading it and learning a bit about how he thinks about this stuff.

Back when Terao joined ufotable around 2003, Knight Hunters Eternity (Weiß Kreuz Glühen) and Dokkoida?! were their notable works. The studio had formed about three years prior. Must’ve been so exciting to experience the transition from early digipaint and relative obscurity to prominence. It amuses me that he was charmed by their furniture. I wonder why the older student recommended ufotable at that time.

I haven’t seen much from ufotable (besides in-between animation) or Terao, but the shadows and effects in Garden of Sinners made the movies visually stand out. I’m glad he decided to work in compositing rather than production. Despite the infamous tight deadlines and low salaries in the industry, he sounds encouraged by the end results from their work and seems to enjoy his career at ufotable. Since he mentioned that directors of photography tend to have their own personal styles, I wonder who and what elements he tends to appreciate.

I assume rotoscoped productions are difficult cases for compositing, since nuances in character movement from life are captured. If the backgrounds and photography can’t keep up with the added realism, the work would likely look jarring.

His description of the relationships there is very cool. I like the idea of them having small conversations with each other all the time. I don't know why he was so worried he wasn't explaining things well, because it was pretty clear to me!
Now I'm curious if he has someone else from the Digital Team in mind to direct something, or if he still is thinking of giving it a go himself.

Seeing as this is an interview, I would assume that the sources are the writers themselves...
