The idea is interesting. The explanation... is WAY too incredibly vague. Right now, this reads like a slush fund to help larger "brands" move money around. I really hope that's not what's going on, but there's way too many unknowns to give a good view on what the intent is. The convention landscape is debatably already oversaturated, why throw money to build new anime con brands? What sort of projects are being sought after? What "return" is FandomFund expecting to see? Who is supplying the funding? It just seems like they're going to get a deluge of 18-20 year olds that think they could run a convention, or else just shuffle money between large events that don't need it.

For the sake of transparency, can someone disclose to what level ANN is actually a partner then with Fandom Fund, if they are neither providing nor receiving financial capital from the fund?

In a capitalist society, yes. If we were a communist society, I don't see that happening.

My impression is that they're trying to create a crowdfunding company, only oriented toward fan-related things, with an emphasis on conventions. (And theoretically, there can be as many conventions for something as there are fans, if not more if non-fans make them too. There is only room for a few LARGE conventions of any particular thing people are fans of, however, which is true of anything.)

Me, I'm keeping an eye on this. I don't have any intent to start a convention or run any events, but I do want to start my own business in an industry centered around licensed products, though I'm not sure if Fandom Fund is that sort of thing or not.

Nope, this has nothing to do with with crowdfunding - this is a fund where investors have put together a pool of money to invest in "fan" productions and events (including, but not limited to, conventions).

What's not clear is where the money is coming from, what the roles of the "partners" are, or how Power Level Productions are qualified to administer the fund. Lots of questions, few answers - but one certainty, few investors put money in without wanting something in return.

And I doubt many fans realize that such a partnerships involves adding Power Level Productions to their "production committee". He who has the gold makes the rules.

All right then, thanks for the answer. If it was a new means of crowdfunding, I could see where they'd be trying to go with this more. Based on your answer, I have no clue how this is supposed to work. Unless this is a way for this company to make their way into a lot of conventions and other related events.

Based on what they've said, it's not clear how this is supposed to work, so confusion is inevitable...

That's probably part of it, but conventions aren't going to provide the kind of returns investors are typically looking for. I can't see any way that they can provide that kind of return.

The typical model for these fund is this: They invest in a hundred things. Ninety will go bust. Nine will break even or turn a modest profit. Hopefully the hundredth will be a runaway cash cow and make up for the other ninety nine.

I'm just not seeing it.
