I think you mean the Tenchi light novels are the third license.

Wow, didn't expect these to ever get licensed.
Quite a big deal if you're a Tenchi Muyo fan since they provide expanded backstory on characters like Washu, Yosho, and Ryoko that the anime adaptations never got into.

There are varying degrees of "We're Definitely Never Getting That Ever", which have been bent these past few years with so many classic anime and manga titles coming out. "Anything That Is A Book" has always been a particularly strong category though, so seeing even that change is really something.

It's a pleasant surprise to have moreTenchi, but I still have seriously mixed feelings since this is all still Kajishima canon (which I've been moving away from since OVA season 4). Personally I prefer if they had licensed the Naoko Hasegawa light novel series, which branches from the first season before Kajishima drove her away (and from what I looked up, takes the characters in far more intriguing directions). Still, as a Tenchi fan I'll likely be collecting this trilogy regardless.

As the original creator, his is the only canon, everything else is spinoff. And basically the only thing he didn't contribute was the Universe version of Kiyone.
Also if anyone else would get second billing it would be Hiroki Hayashi.
The crap Kajishima takes imo has little to do with him. Most of the background that leaves people puzzled by the later ovas were never imported. These series of light novels will actually go a long a way to fill in a lot of those gaps. The second issue is the ovas are released intermittently and in batches of 5-6 episodes. It not like the main version of tenchi had 26 episode runs like Universe or God forbid Tenchi in love, hell even Gxp has 26 and Geminar had 13 50 min episodes. So things get cut out because everything cant be fit into a few episodes, so some character development was cut in ova 3 so some background could actually be put in.
I mean Tenchi the movie 2, which is what Hasegawa is responsible for is okay, but its more akin to dragon ball gt to z if anything.
Also the manga series has been around for a while, and its basically the canon storyline with some new twists like Ryoko clones. So I imagine if you like Tenchi 2 Daughter of Darkness you would like the manga.

from the bottom of my heart...
YEAAAHHHHHHHHHHSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As much as I hate the direction where Tenchi Muyo went, I think it has potential for a decent reboot at some point, including all the unused elements that could have make it really interesting, such as these three novels for example.

Hm... What’s wrong with where the OVAs went?
I remember enjoying the various Tenchis back in the day, even Tenchi in Tokyo (albeit to a lesser extent)... especially the weird politics and mythology. Is it worth looking into the series now? What’s the best stuff to watch or read? The whole franchise seems super confusing and convoluted to me, so I’d appreciate any advice....

Tenchi, the cannon stuff, are some of my all time favorite Sci-fi series, and I really look forward to seeing more of it.

This'll be a bit of a rant, so bear with me if you choose to read:
Based on what I learned, this is what I understand--Tenchi Muyo in the beginning was created by three people. Hiroki Hayashi was the director (he also did the El Hazard OVA), Naoko Hasegawa was the writer, and Kajishima the "original creator" was actually the character/spacecraft designer. After the first season, Kajishima created a ruckus with the other two, displeased with the direction the story was taking, and they decided to leave rather than put up with him. Starting with Season 2 he altered the girls' characters to give them less strong personalities (because he apparently didn't believe women had such strong personalities in real life) and went so far as to reduce tough-girl Ryoko to a comedic punching bag, and decided to structure the storyline in a way where Tenchi will apparently marry all the girls in the future and thus be rid of the love rivalries (and render it pointless in the long run).
Rather than "official canon" I specifically call the OVA past Season 1 "Kajishima canon" because I've more or less lost respect of his intentions with the storyline. People have complained about Season 3, but at least stuff happened. Season 4 on the other hand--even at only 4 episodes it was like he stopped trying to maintain keeping the OVA interesting in any way, and Tenchi himself really was reduced to being as good as air (compared to before). I'm not kidding when I say I prefer the Tokyo series over the Kajishima OVA, albeit I argue that Universe really is the best incarnation (which caps off with two really good movies). The reason I bring up the Naoko Hasegawa light novels is because I get the feeling she wrote the story-line closer to what Hiroki Hayashi had planned for it , and whether "official" or not, I still want to read that out of my own personal curiosity as someone who remains a Tenchi fan to this day (despite Kajishima's handling).
And if not her novel series, I think what should happen is that at least the manga be license-rescued. I still have the whole series in my library, it's like an alternate route from after where Season 2 ends, and it's a charming one at that (only here do all the characters really acknowledge each other as a family, even Ryoko). But like I said before, as a fan I'll collect these novels regardless--and maybe at least find out why Ayeka and Sasami's father didn't follow through in pursuing revenge against Tenchi after Season 2.

Ah, I was so happy when I saw this the other day. Tenchi is one of my all time favorites and I never thought I'd get to see the novels in english.
I'll definitely be picking these up =D
I hope these do well enough for the GXP novels to be brought over. A lot of required reading is in there for OVA 4 from what I've seen.

I just got the impression OVA 4 was a sorry excuse for Kajishima to showcase his character art talent and not much else.
