Kodansha announced on October 18,
they makes out of print their Yuki Suetsugu's all 25 volumes including "Flower of Eden"(12 volumes). Because they acknowledges Flower of Eden's basketball scene composition was close resemblance Takehiko Inoue's "Slam Dunk". Suetsugu herself published an apology for it. http://www.kodansha.co.jp/info.html Japanese news Mainichi Shimbun http://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/hl?a=20051018-00000165-mai-soci ITmedia http://www.itmedia.co.jp/news/articles/0510/18/news099.html Flower of Eden manga#5415 -----edited to add----- Verification site http://tretre.fc2web.com/index.html Similarities to "Slam Dunk" http://tretre.fc2web.com/sd1.html http://tretre.fc2web.com/sd2.html Similarities to "Real"(Takehiko Inoue) http://tretre.fc2web.com/real.html Similarities to "Bastard!!"(Kazushi Hagiwara) http://tretre.fc2web.com/bastard.html Similarities to "Ren Ai no Jiyu(liteally: Freedom of Love)"(Miwa Ueda) http://tretre.fc2web.com/miwa.html Last edited by Emil Scherbe on Thu Oct 20, 2005 6:24 am; edited 1 time in total |

Look at this one with TenTen/Ikkitousen side-by-side images. Also eerily similar. I demand that these plagiarizing mangakas commit hari-kiri!!!! |

Japan-blogger Marxy on the role 2ch played in all this, though the real meat is in his response to R.'s comment. Plagarism and the self-censorship of the Japanese media are two of the things he tends to talk about most, though, so if you'd like to see him get more in-depth about the things in that post, his archives are always worth a browse.
And wow, someone actually made a link to Mainichi without it being to the "We Make Ananova Look Legit!" WaiWai section! I am very impressed. |

Busted!
Geez. You'd think that, as a manga-ka, she'd have more pride in her OWN work. Either that, or have the wits to realize that Slam Dunk is INCREDIBLY popular, and that someone would've eventually noticed? Jeebus. Serves her right. Pilgarism at it's best. How could one copy from a highly popular series and expect to get away with it?

Wow. I know a lot of people who like Eden no Hana. They're going to be disappointed.

What the crap?!
Before you start yelling plagiarism, please note that IMITATING THE COMPOSITION OF A MANGA PANEL OR ILLUSTRATION IS NOT ILLEGAL. The mangaka has NOT plagiarized; it's only plagiarism if he/she actually copies the panel ITSELF without permission. I mean, tons of manga tutorial books go to say that referencing the image (in the almost exact same way that this manga has done) is a perfectly legal process and can "shoutout" to the referenced mangaka? (and this DOES happen in manga a TON) There are so many movies that do the same thing--they imitate a particular scene from another movie, either in a sort of respectful "shoutout" or in parody. I can't think of any "fine cinema" that does this off the top of my head (but there definitely are such) but what first comes to mind for me is Shrek 2, with the LOTR and Spiderman-like shots. If what this mangaka has done is illegal, then there's a TON of other people out there to sue. I will conceed that the mangaka seemed to have the intention to copy, seeing as she felt obliged to apologize. The intentions were wrong, but there was ABSOLUTELY NOTHING wrong with the action. |

That's what I think too, so what if they got their idea from another image? Isn't that how everything originates? There's also only so many ways you can draw someone when they're shooting a basketball. Nothing was identical so I think the issue is being blown out of proportion. |

I would agree with that. As long as the actual story has not been plagarized I really don't think this warrants a criminal investigation. |

At first I thought "that can't be plagarism - basketball always looks like that!"
But after seeing the merged panels, she really did copy the ENTIRE scene down to the poses and facial expressions (and admitted it!). Total plagarism. Shame on her. D: |

That's what it looks like she did. She appears to have copied some panels (minus the background) to a T. That would be the artistic equivalent of plagiarism. It'd be one thing if she was using real-life basketball photos as models, but modeling her artwork on artwork from another basketball manga is, imho, pretty low. -t |

This actually was just on one of the morning news shows here (regional, not NHK). They showed a number of examples, more than the examples posted on the BBS.
Once or twice might be a nod, shout out, or homage, but to do as much copying as this mangaka did...I have to agree with those that say it's plagiarism. |
