Good news. I know this will be a recap or possibly a sidestory but it's better if they strike while the iron is hot and not make the same mistake WIT/Production IG did with Attack on Titan.

The announcement specifically rules out the film as a recompilation of the television anime. |

A sequel was coming, we knew it. But I have kind of mixed thoughts on a movie.

I'm sure there will be a season 2 as well some day. For now, the movie sounds like a good idea.

I'm not a Yuri!!! On Ice fan by any means (it's a long story).. but congrats on the new film. The anime may not be my taste but I'm always happy to see any franchise give it's fans more of what they want. My question is though, will this ever have a chance of appearing in theaters in the west? I remember a while back that they said they won't be releasing or allowing any of the anime to come over here anymore so is the film included? I may take a guess and say yes, but I'm honestly curious. I know that fans were very upset and angry that the anime wouldn't be available to be imported or sold overseas and even that made me a little upset at the conpany. If it was an anime i liked, I would be upset as well. So if anyone could answer my question that would be nice.

While more YOI is great, if it's a film that basically means the west is probably not gunna see it for quite some time. If at all. I hope for this case it'll be brought over. We've seen more films brought over than in the past, but still, not everything gets licensed and brought to the west.

I think you're misunderstanding the situation some. The company that is releasing the YOI discs in Japan has stopped export sales of the Japanese discs for reasons no one is entirely clear about (although there may be several reasons why, read this for more info: animenewsnetwork.com/answerman/2017-02-15/.112254). This does not mean that discs will not be released in other countries, just that the Japanese discs will not be easily obtainable. I would be extremely surprised if blu-rays/dvd's were NOT released in many markets. With my limited understanding of how licensing works, I wouldn't expect them for several months yet, but they will be released. As for the new Yuri on Ice film getting a theatrical release, that's more questionable. Anime features never do huge box office in the US (not sure about other places), although things do get released (your name is currently playing in US theaters). I wouldn't be surprised either way. Crunchyroll has the license to YOI in the US, and they have been experimenting with special event anime movie nights in US theaters. The YOI film could have that sort of release, or a more general or art house theatrical release like your name. Whether or not it plays in theaters, however, an international blu-ray/dvd release of the new film is very likely, given the popularity of the series. |

A film huh? Well, guessing by what they did with your name it'll get such a linited release. I mean, look how big your name. was. It was released in only a few theaters.

I'm really glad to hear it's not a compilation. Since crunchyroll has the license and its such a popular show, I'm sure it'll at least be streamed like the new Digimon movies have been. I hope so at least.

Your post appears to focus only on the US release, of which Your Name did fairly well considering the lack of tie-in like Pokemon, One Piece, or Naruto has. Funimation opened it in 311 theatres, the tenth largest for an anime film in the US. I suppose when you compare it to Hollywood films that open in thousands, it doesn't compare, but that's a much larger cost and audience than Your Name would have ever had in the US. Looking at Japan, it opened in over 300 theatres there, which is mainstream-level. Late night films may open in 20-40 theatres with more popular ones in around 120 theatres, but Toho and the East Japan Marketing Company promoted it heavily to the mainstream audience, who enthusiastically responded. It's a much widescale release there compared to the US simply due to population areas. Yuri!! on Ice's film will probably get around 120 theatres, depending on who will distribute it. That'll be great for a late night work, but it's not going to be marketed towards the average Japanese person like Your Name was. In that sense, yes it will get a limited release, but the context is different. |

With the international love and fame Yuri!!! on Ice has, we will see the film premiring in America probably weeks after Japan airs theirs.

Dude, most anime movies don't usually get a release weeks after they air. Think on terms of months. |

Maybe it's going to be the Phichit on Ice extravaganza! We can hope, right?
