Eh... this was a somewhat cool interview, even if it didn't delve into Aniplex' business rhetoric. Some people would see this as a few softballs tossed down the middle.
Also, those SAO pictures semi-randomly inserted into the article are gratuitous.

Great interview. Learned some interesting things. I too did not expect SAO to be this big, and I still don't get why it is. Also, count me in those people who get "it".

I'm one of those that gets "it" too.
Also, I'm sure that AoA is doing what they, and their parent Aniplex, wants done in the North American market. I will follow Justin's sage advice and concentrate on the media that makes me happy.

I had no idea SAO was that big, I remember it getting a lot of buzz when it came out, but that seemed to of died down. I'm dissapointed that he didn't ask him about what he thinks of the Funimation and Crunchyroll partnership.

This was less an interview and more a valentine. But I guess pressing him for the millionth time on Aniplex's horrendous price-gouging is just going to have the same effect: Goto glibly dismissing price concerns because a handful of people actually buy these releases.
[Edit]: removed name calling. Errinundra.

Henry usually screens the questions that the interviewers ask before hand. He probably refused to let them ask about it. There's also the chance that the actual interview took place before the announcement was made.

I'm glad to hear that that the anime fan community is growing, but I cannot help but entertain some serious doubts about the likelihood of anime becoming a mainstream cultural keystone in the U.S. IMHO, if anime were to somehow attain mainstream status/popularity, it could only do so by transforming into something that it isn't right now.

So in keeping with AoA's business model, can we expect Akibafest to be overpriced, underwhelming, but still better than going to Japan for the same thing?

Quote: | I think the US market is really healthy, because in the Japanese market, the life of the title is a little bit short. In the US, once a title becomes popular, the life is long. |
...yes, that will happen when you don't make every purchase into a "life or limb" decision. "Hey, did you get X"?" "No, I got to eat this week."
I'll point out a few more eyebrow raisers in this "softballs" but in general, it's not that they underestimate the US market, it's that they just don't care.
Quote: | Sometimes we have to be careful about the future of the packaged media business, but we have to prepare something new year by year. |
"Even when we don't have the stuff that will match our release model of premium regardless, we still have to release stuff.... that still has to be overpriced so that we don't have to face sticker shock over the big hit getting hit big."
Quote: | Last year was the best year for the package sales.
Really? Wow.
Because we added titles. |
I'm really starting to get a better idea of why the Japanese release model is so intolerable There is no past, there is only now and what's coming up. The idea that people would want to buy catalogue titles? Completely alien to these people somehow.
AoA: The premium model will only work so far for premium titles. How many copies of your venerated Cowboy Bebop would Funimation have sold if each four episode volume was 75 dollars? But you're not only hamstringing that title, you're holding back your entire catalogue by pointing out which ones are "not so good" even before you produce the first copy.
Wow, love all your children and they will all love you. Yuck, a moral...

That series was an insane ride!!! I was paying attention for the first 10 episodes or so, but then it took quite a twist and became background to other things I was doing. But I did stick it out. It's nothing I would ever purchase by no means.
The interview was so so. I'm sure it's a good thing for the area, but where I live, nothing like that event will ever come this way.
I just have some financial bones to pick with those guys, but who doesn't.

It sounds like it was an interview that took place at Anime Expo. At one point, he says, "here we have one announcement." and then goes on to talk about a couple of other cons. I think ANN did a whole bunch of these interviews at Anime Expo and is just spacing out when they publish them.
Definitely interesting to read, though.

Good to hear things are going well for AoA, I do wonder how much AoJ are getting in MGs for the titles that are not going to AoA, as I can only imagine it's a rather juicy sum.
Surprisingly interesting article!
Though I can't say the same for part of the comment section, as it's the usual people with the usual whining .

The concern some have is that they'll try to at least try to pander to a more global audience and drain away everything that's good about anime(think Hollywood). Goto's absolutely right that anime needs to stay Japanese or else it'll stop being anime.

Everyone! Let's crash the party, take it over, and hold this guy hostage until we get a full refund on all the extra money we spent on their home releases!
Just kidding.
