I am not a monogatari fan, but I am yet to find out what these two have in common at all. What I understand is that monogatari is this experimental, fantasy, parody series...Contrast that with a grounded manga that prouds itself mainly in realism. First Akiyuki Shinbo/SHAFT take up the anime, now this? Someone explain this to me, I really want to understand.

NisiOisin is writing the crossover, and he's obviously using one of Monogatari's best characters, Tsubasa Hanekawa, as the spin-off's protagonist. If you don't know Monogatari, every arc is specific to an apparition - usually an animal. So it only makes since to use a lion for Tsubasa, who already had a cat and tiger.
I'm not familiar with the shōgi manga, so I can't say how those characters would be involved.

All I can think is that the editor is trying to get the hype to a maximum for the Anime and Live-action adaptation, and what best for that than the most current most popular franchise writer?^^

Not much about what the anime industry does makes sense anymore unless you look at it from a pure marketing and monetary perspective. It's probably just them figuring the anime stands a better chance at being marketable to buyer otaku if they give it some sort of relation to a hit like Monogatari series before SHAFT goes to adapt it. Really makes you wonder how the adaptation is going to come out like and what tone and content wise from the manga is going to survive since a lot of people argue it's gone to totally the wrong studio. Personally I think Aniplex just wanted the license for it's established award winning brand value (they love this sort of thing at least once a year) and just pawned it off to one of their favorite go to studios in SHAFT without being concerned what they might do with it.
If all else fails and SHAFT just does it's usual gimmicks with the anime at least the fans of the source get a probably more down to Earth live action adaptation. People that just like SHAFT's whole style (and there's sure to be plenty watching it just for the fact they are still really popular with some crowds by default) still get their new anime to fool around with.

At its core, the Monogatari series is a very grounded character piece. It's about growing up and it's about broken people doing the best they can. I haven't read March comes in like a lion, but if it is a realistic character drama, I don't see this as much of a stretch at all.
