I'm looking for music that uses the high highs and low lows you'd find in a horror movie.

Can anyone suggest songs that are truly chilling?

Hmm. I haven't really heard anything "creepy-scary," but Hellsing has some "creepy-weird" music. It's not particularly supposed to make you scared or anything, but it's the closest thing I can think of right now.

Pretty much any song or piece of music played in a Minor key will have that sort of effect. So in that case, I'll also suggest the song "Aura" from .hack//SIGN. There are 2 versions, the regular version and another called the "evil version."

Elfen Lied's opening theme, "Lilium," is pretty haunting. It's like a slow, Latin hymn, and it sets an ideally chilling mood for the series.

Have you ever listened to the score to RIVEN, the sequel to Myst by Robyn Miller?

It has an ambience like nothing I've ever heard - and it's not easily recognizable. I listen to it once and a while - my brother can't take it sometimes, he's afraid somethign crazy is gonna happen when it's on.

As for scary anime music? 3x3 Eyes has some neat stuff in there, more traditional tensional strings...

I'd stay away from resident evil stuff - but sometimes doing your own music rocks too, an old out of tune piano palyed softly is pretty freaky, and experimenting with whispers too - if you have a copy of Quake 1 kickign around there's a track of just whispering on it, terrifying.

This isn't from anime, but the ending song to Japanese "Ring" movie is creepy/scary. The girl singing it has a light, airy kind of voice, but that makes the song scarier. Maybe it's the association with the movie...

Anyway, you should check Texhnolyze soundtracks. They have some pretty creepy tracks. Paranoia Agent also has some weird music.
