No surprises there. I suspect that Volume 21 of FMA, which is released next Monday, will sell better than the previous two, since it's coming on the heels of the anime announcement.

Hmm. One Piece is obviously Japan's most popular manga.... and oh look(!) Viz isn't even on volume 20.

This does not compute.

You would be a lot better off with Glénat's french version (which is in the 40s).

Just because One Piece can sell more in a week then any of Viz's more popular titles can in an entire year it's only in Japan not America where it really counts to them.

I think the main issue with One Piece is the abstract artstyle. This is what kept me away for so long. I finally gave in and watched the fansubs with a friend, and now I'm buying the DVDs from Funi, but Viz's amazingly slow release speed is what's keeping me from bothering with the manga. If it came out bi-monthly, or tri-monthly as they seem to be doing with all their popular series nowadays, I might consider buying it up to current, but at this pace, they just keep falling further behind.

That is very true for me too. First, I didn't want to even try reading One Piece. Then I read half of the first chapter then stop. After I tried 2 or 3 chapters, that is when I cannot stay away from it. The drawing style may have the people stay away at first sight, but if they even try to read couple chapter, I'm absolutely sure they will get hook.

You are right about this.

At first, when I read the first chapter, the art style was a bit overwhelming for me to take. As such, I read one chapter a week. Soon, I ended up reading the rest of the first arc in one day (the major battle portion). Later on, I read a few chapters of the Buggy arc and at that point, I got hooked. I plowed through the rest of the book until it ended before Luffy's fight with Buggy was about to start. I am now anticipating the next volume. Anime catgrin

Also, since I live in Québec, (which has a great selection of manga from french publishers) I have plenty of One Piece volumes to pick from (up to the 40s)! Anime exclamation I wasn't even aware of my province having such a great inventory until I went to my local bookstore a year ago(before that, the only manga I would find in stores like Zellers and Wal-Mart would be Dragon Ball, Yu-Gi-Oh and Naruto). This is awesome! There's even stuff that you either can't find or are hard to locate in the U.S. (e.g. Rose of Versailles, Bokurano, Devil Devil, Hokuto no Ken, Detroit Metal City, Video Girl Ai, etc).

This is such a privilege for me.

Anyway, One Piece is certainly a special manga series.

As a very loyal follower of the One Piece manga series I am very, very happy to see the chart results like they are. The series never fails to disappoint, which is why I keep reading it, and there are those times that I love to go back and do a read-a-thon of the whole series up to what I have. It's kind of disappointing that the same thing can't be said for the Viz release, but I think that just has to do with the audience. It's not that appealing to the North American audience in my mind.
