1. I never said those shows would immediately follow eachother.

2. They're massive undertakings that require a considerable amount of effort to produce. They are not normal shows.

3. June for the 1990s episodes. Likely September for the 00s.

Lunar controversy indeed. Imagine some of the viral hatred at XSeed when they tried giving the games a more proper translation for the PSP version.

Then again, people complained when Symphony of the Night got a proper re-dub for the PSP. So no more awful "What is a man" dialog. I guess actual quality be damned, as long as we have our nostalgia to cling on to.

(Thankfully I didn't see many people defending the Star Ocean 2 PSX voices and bashing the PSP remake's vocie cast, that'd really be getting out of hand)

Though even for all the Bill Clinton tomfooley, Lunar was probably the first big JRPG which kept all the anime stuff rather than try to completely whitewash and change it (see: Revelations: Persona) so there's that, at least. Still surprised they kept those fan-service anime bromides.

Speaking of Chrono Trigger, I always found it funny they changed the Grandleon to Masamune. It's a European time-line with a classic European broadsword, yet they gave it a Japanese name in the dub. Not sure what they were thinking. There's a fan translation of it that uses the proper names though.

Well, it was found in the middle ages, but it was spoiler[created 12,000 years ago by a guy who lived in what could more or less be called a floating Atlantis. And it's name derives from the two dream-spirit-beings it's composed of]. I don't think normal naming conventions apply

SotN's crappy dub was a total classic, if in an ironic sense. Hell, it may be among the first examples of widespread ironic appreciation.When most people think of that game, after how kickass it is, the thing they immediately think of is that "Piles of Secrets" goodness. It's the sort of thing that becomes such a defining characteristic of the game that it becomes a part of it almost.

Replacing it with what basically sounded like any other ho-hum anime dub out there...welp, just wasn't the same.

god that dub was just so.. well yeah .. but i am happy they still have it around for the psn/xbox-live version. It makes me laugh every-time i hear that classic line lol.

Pardon the nostalgia, but… this. This so hard, all the neighbors have to call the kids back inside.

I only got in on the tail end of Working Designs' PS1 stuff, but man it was good. The fact that the English lyrics to "Luna's Boat Song" are singable in English, and sung by a talented actress, should not be under-appreciated. (by comparison, I cringed at the English lyrics they came up with for Final Fantasy X's "Suteki Da Ne"… super-literal and as singable as a brick.)

This is a great and informative podcast. My thoughts on Japanese games are this: outside of the games that try to emulate western games or heavy moe games that would only appeal to Japanese gamers, I think the idea that there is something wrong with Japan is an idea that's only in people's minds.

I see these arguements about how lost Japan is and the arguement simply makes no sense, I saw one guy claiming that Hideo Kojima should retire because he was never a good developer in the first place. The guy who made Braid claimed that Japanese developers don't respect people's intelligence, and the most popular game series is a generic FPS with a laughable horrible story involving Russia trying to conquer the world and losing within a month. Does anyone think Activision really respect's gamers intelligence? I read one review of Xenoblade where they marked it down because it was a Wii title, and wasn't HD.

This is why seemingly all western designed games seem to star muscular shaved head badasses, because when someone tries to actually step outside of the box video game currently exist in their yelled at.

We have basically stated that medium sized games such as SRPGs, JRPGs, and point and click adventures shouldn't exist, and the result is that for games such as Shadowrun, Doublefine Adventure game, and other niche games you basically have to go through Kickstarter.

Western gaming culture has pretty much come to mirror the Hollywood movie culture this generation, unfortunately. Aiming at the least common denominator. Space marines, cover-based shooting, FPS... EA and Activision being the two biggest Western publishers don't exactly help. I remember one article I read that praised these games for "being like a Hollywood movie, with zippy one-liner dialog to match" or something. My first thought was "...is this supposed to be a compliment?"

Sadly, flashy graphics, achievements scores, "pwning noobs", and etcetera have become the market here. I'm surprised when a very artsy/somber game like Trusty Bell/Eternal Sonata is released in the west and manages to still find an audience. And it's not just Eastern games that stick out, it's also why X-COM is now a generic FPS series.

Pretty much the same sentiment regarding western games and what they have become nowadays outside of indie developers. Of course, I can't say they are all terrible games, some of them are great, but most don't appeal to me.

I think the current crop of western gamers, outside of the kids spending too much time on Xbox Live, have shifted to people who don't have much time to sit through a 40+ hour adventure. Picking up a game and doing a deathmatch for 2-hours or complete the short single-player campaign fits better. This is my anecdotel experience at a game store I help out at, though.

Regarding X-Com, another developer out there was able to grab the title and redo it properly as a tactical game. I'm glad.

@Charred Knight - I am so glad that kickstarter exists. Without it, Wasteland 2 would never have been released.

I loved Working Designs back when I was just a little kid into all these bizarre Japanese games on the Sega CD and Saturn. I hope they reach their goal, but it seems like quite a steep amount for a game that not many even know about. I wish they could have started off with a more ambitious (and maybe cheaper) project.
