While mellow series like that are still entertaining, overall I don't really enjoy them as much because I don't ever want to rewatch them. This is mostly because I don't like that strange feeling I get from things like Arjuna, Kino's Journey, or Mushishi like someone has drained away some of my soul and I'm lessened for having watched it instead of gained.

Natsume Yuujinchou is my favourite relaxing anime. Recently I also became a fan of Aria. Both of them are good for de-stressing, I find Smile

Aria was beautiful and calm, yes, but it's not drama. It didn't even count much toward character development, the show was its setting. Even its more tragic elements were all in the past.

For true drama, we have Toradora and Sora. Well, True Tears would be a bit closer to "calm" but that one was too wrong. Toei's Key adaptations fit the description as well. Their Kanon plays like an Afterschool Special and the Air movie is slow moving drama behind overused lighting effects.

It's kind of hard to know what you mean. Calm drama? That doesn't make much sense to me. Drama is rarely calm. If it is, then it's not really drama. If by calm you just mean that it's subdued in its story-telling, then yes, yes I love shows like that a ton. Koi Kaze, Air TV, and Hantsuki are some of my personal favorites.

Mushishi is great, but I made the error of attempting to marathon it. I am convinced that it is impossible; the show is simply too slow -- in a great way -- to work in that format.

I marathon'd it only because it completely drew me into its world. When I watch shows like Mushi-shi (i.e. - slow moving anime), I generally end up having to break it up over three to six months or more depending on the length of the anime. I highly enjoy slow moving anime as it is very relaxing, but special cases like Mushi-shi, that have an extremely unique premise and fantasy setting pull me right in and don't let go until the ride is over.

Animegomaniac mentioned anime like Tora-dora!, but I can't really categorise them as calm, because the comedy aspects make me laugh a lot and sometimes the plot is very thick and quick moving. Megiddo also made a valid point about some drama anime. My favourite example would have to be Rumbling Hearts. It is actually a very intense drama love story. I'm not usually one to get completely absorbed in such love stories, but this one was awesome and had me holding my breath with each new development. Definitely not calm in any respect. That being said, love dramas like Winter Sonata work very well. It is slow moving, I enjoy the artwork and it isn't intense compared to other romance anime. Anime like Iroha Hanasaku, are probably my favourite types of 'calmer anime,' if you will. Very engaging and sometimes intense, sometimes light-hearted, always entertaining.

But at the end of the day, Mushi-shi has set the standard for slow paced anime (according to me). It has a certain 'je ne sais quoi,' (as the french say) or that little something special, something intangible, quite magical really, that turns an anime into a masterpiece. I would like to see more anime like Mushi-shi to be honest, but to make it happen is next to impossible, and that is why these anime series are in a league of their own!

I love titles like Only Yesterday and Kino's Journey and Natsume Yuujinchou Shi. You know, stuff that aren't in your face but are serenely-paced and tell touching stories that you can get lost in. Sometimes I just want to relax and unwind and not have an ADHD show blaring at me.

So yeah, I love it.

I usually have trouble trying not to marathon it, because it's that good.

the drama bewteen god and mankind is the best.
cough Nge cough
A show who's only genre is drama is pretty lame, imho. Kino's Journey, Mushishi, Ergo Proxy and NGE are some that manage to be dramatic alot of the time without boring my ass off. Now, Trapnnad and Losernon (Clannad and Kanon) now that stuffi is bs, kill it with fire.
True Tears is really damn close to qualify for the bonfire too.

And lets not forget about the ABC of psycho drama, Boogiebop pHANTOM and Lain. Now that is nail-biting gravy.

You've insulted Clannad and Kanon! Prepare to die, gao! Evil or Very Mad

Well, whether or not I like a calm drama depends mostly on the
characters and writing; just like with any other genre for me.
I love the Key adaptions but have never seen Aria or Mushi-shi
because I haven't heard anything good about the characters.

I am not sure what you mean by "calmer drama," but I think that it might be something close to "slice of life." It would have helped a lot if you had given a few examples.

If it qualifies then my favorite calmer drama would be Fancy Lala which, by coincidence, I am watching now for at least the fifth time. It has aspects of a magical girl story but I think of it as a light drama that is mostly a coming of age story, though Miho does not reach adulthood in the show.

Others that I really like that might qualify are:
Aria. You cannot get much calmer than this, and in my opinion it definitely is a drama though it might also qualify as slice of life.
Ai Yori Aoshi. I do not consider this to be a harem show, but the things that make it seem like harem do contribute to the drama.
Chobits. This show surprised me with how much it deals with concepts such as what it means to be human, or be in love, or have free will.
Fruits Basket. This is a fantasy but it also explores different aspects of human nature and relationships.
His and Her Circumstances. This has a lot of comedy, but it also has a lot of drama. It is one of my favorite romance stories.

No reference to Spice and Wolf?

I think that's the finest example of "Calmer Drama" I can think of. At least that I've seen so far.

The show was like an anti-stress pill. I'd watch one or two eps per day, usually at night right before going to sleep. It was so relaxing, but not because it was boring. The characters, the story, the wonderful Op and Ed (Specially Season 1) were so soothing I'd forget about everyday problems and just relax.

A shame Season 2 basically put the nail in the coffin for future seasons. I loved its slow-paced approach to tell a story.

Btw, judging from comments I keep on hearing, Mushi-Shi looks like something I should be watching in the near future as well.

Its not about the character or characters themselves. Its about the screwed up situations theyre in. Oh and its mostly non linear so after the first 4 eps r so you can juggle with the eps. Won make any diff.
