This might come off as venting but I'm really just confused...
But why is almost everything just down right depressing? At frist I didn't really care cause I would rotate to a comdey but now I am seeing things, and its just depressing. Okay I am find with the whole anti-social psycho personality disorder of Light, and Zero, but its just too much. I mean like everything great has like a mental twist. Eva, wtih Shinji crying gave you a hint, just like Gundam Seed, but Escaflowne, with that ending, particular the whole cast of Gundam Wing were mental, and now Double "Oh." And don't even try to read to manga adaptions, they are in worse, with Scryed. No wonder this generation is depress, they can't see past the dark and dreadful anime to see the beauty within it.
I use to watch anime to relax and escape, but now I am afraid to start anything from fear of the ending. Maybe its just my way of thinking but... I don't know, Am I thinking way too much into?

Seriously, watch Nanaka 6/17. If that anime doesn't make you bust up laughing, I don't know what will. =P

There are just as many happy anime out there as there are sad anime out there. You just need to find the happy medium ones. ^^

Because to much happiness pisses people off. This isn't a spike in depressing themes of anime, these themes have been there for a while, it's just that they are just popular right now. Anime and manga has always had allot of depressing things in them. This is for a very simple reason, anime and manga are creative art. depression, strife, anger, evil, and craziness have always had a strong place in all forms of art. That's why there's sayings like "with hard times comes great art," or something similar to that. If you don't like the depressing stuff, just go watch a comedy (there's plenty of good comedy).

haruhi suzimiya is who you're speaking of, lol.

Watch Wolf's Rain to make you happier... not really, thats one of the most depressing Sad Oh, and stay away from Grave of the Fireflies movie. Can't help you find happy ones, all the happy ones seem a little...gay to me. Lucky Star is the gayest I'll go, and even thats REALLY pushing it, I'm basically only watching cause Kari Wahlgren kicks ass Razz

Well, I personally prefer serious stuff, myself. Not outright "slit-your-wrists-after-watching" depressing stuff (I despise that kind of stuff), mind you, but dramatic and somber stuff like science fiction, mysteries, romantic drama, thrillers, or horror. Not that comedy is out of the question, but I just don't watch it that offen.

I personally prefer depressing anime to any other kind. I basically judge an anime based on how it makes me feel at the end. Usually if it depresses me I consider it good because the story and characters had me feeling so involved that I really cared about what happened. This isn't to say I don't like happy anime, I just finished Haruhi Suzumiya and loved it.
Thankfully there's a great balance of anime genres out there so you can pretty much find anything you want if you do some research

To the thread starter, have you tried Ergo Proxy? It's a serious anime set in a very dark world. It's about journey and there is some parts that have a "sadself" feel to them but nothing depressing. A very good anime. One of my all time favorites.

Yea, that's who! lol

BTW I have to show you something. While it is true that Lucky Star has the apperance of lolifest 2000-jailbate, and does open with little girls in school skirts dancing to loli tunes, a super-pedo father figure, no point, and is nothing more than a subliminal 30 minute commercial it is NOT GAY. LOL The reasoning for that is simple!!!

See, this is why you shouldn't watch Kanon, Clannad, Air, and their respective movies in the same month! Laughing

Eh, watch GaoGaiGar; failing that, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. If you still feel down, watch Beck.

If none of those work, get help.

I know reccomendation threads aren't exaclty tolerated, but a good anime that would release you from your walk down depressed street would be Great Teacher Onizuka. It's just .... if that gets you depressed than well... so will a shopping spree, a big rainbow lollypop, candy, a new car, having more than one 1$ coin, new socks, and all those other happy things out there. It's just a bundle of laughs. I can see where you're coming from with many animes seeming depressed... but i mean, i dont' feel it. Either i'm shallow, or you're thinking about it too hard... you're getting to into it perhaps (just a thought). Sure there are many romance animes that don't end on the happiest of notes, but there are also those that do, as there are with any anime genre; there are sad endings and happy endings, it all really depends on the writers. So perhaps you've had bad luck in choosing your anime, or perhaps you're getting into it rather intensely i don't know. But i do know that GTO will get you happy, and if it doens't well... i'm afraid my assistance stops there.

You think those shows are depressing?
You dont want to watch something, like, say, The Violinist of Hameline.
And certainly not When They Cry. Or for that matter Shigofumi.

But there are tons of very good shows out there that arent depressing. For a good comedy right now I totally reccomend Lovely Complex.

The thing is that sometimes people want a show that evokes great emotion and hits them harder then, say, your average comedy. Something that will leave an emotional impact.
When you get tired of those you turn back to comedy and once your comedied out, you dig back into something serious.
Its just a cycle. Its pretty normal.

Watch the first two Tenchi OVA's or Tenchi Universe. The warm and fuzzy feeling is undeniable!

I got more responds than I thought, thank you...
But I think, my point was missed.... Its just that I dont watch comdeys because they usually have a routine, school, beach, hot spring, etc.,etc... Nevermind Its just actions aren't just action anymore... Its just everything I liked turns out to be depressing... I can't describe it, even comdeys are depressing, with the loves triangles, plot twist. PLease Twins, GTO and Girls Bravo, just an examlpe. Basically I can't even start anything cause the outcome. Why can't anything just be face value, and.... Well how do you guys get over. =(
