Hey... this is in response (or rather more on the lines of agreement) to a comment made by the ANN member "Tenchi" concerning the supposed "inherent evils" of anime. Tenchi defended anime in his blog.
Through some backtracking on the net, I stumbled on this site, http://crossroad.to/text/responses/anime.htm I read through for a bit, and I was really dadgum appalled. I, myself, am a Christian, and I just really wanted to let people (believers and non-believers alike) know that this is most definately not necessarily the belief of all Christians. I'm a big 'ole anime and manga fan (primarily manga), and, although I of course acknowledge that there is plenty of less-than-appropriate anime out there, that does not in any way mean that the entire genre should be discounted as "an instrument of evil." Personally, I think that anime and manga are simply two more legitimate ways of conveying visual ideas. Just the same as a novel is different than a biography and an action flick is not the same as a documentary. Someone out there, at one point, said "Hey! I'll bet we could do this twice as quick, for a quarter of the cost, and make it look better, if we just draw the crap!" I hate to judge the poor folks for their opinion, but I think that they may just be a little (or more) in the dark as to the actual scope of anime itself. They treat it as one big series rather than as a separate style of conveying characters and ideas. Something tells me that God never forbade flickering pictures so fast that they looked like they were moving. In fact, tit-for-tat, live action movies probably have a higher proportion of objectionable content than animated ones. I just wanted to let everyone know that not all Christians are creepy teetotalling folks that walk around declaring that entire genres of media are evil. That's just absurd. Thanks. |

To each his own.
If he feels that compelled to put down one "good" book for another, then so be it. |

I'm a Roman Catholic and I DON'T find anime in any way objectionable. I try to stay away from hentai (sometimes) but I think that anime in general is a good medium to convey ideas and sometimes can teach the younger ones about certain things.
No doubt, you'll need to sit with the kid and lend a moderating voice to it and explain certain things but I think anime is a lot less objectionable than live-action. The fact that it is animated and therefore, deemed not as realistic, already lessens the impact somewhat. |

Right... I agree with you, Ken...
But Tenchuu... What exactly do you mean by that, and who're you refering to? |

I myself am a Baptist, and even though, I can say there are a few evil anime out there, I am not into judging everyone, and everything. like most hellfire and brimstone Christians are. (there are a few, mostly these are "baby" Christians that take things in the Bible literally).
These people, and a preacher or two, I have been around, and if anything, tend to be gullible as well. I had a preacher once believe what he was told that the government was going to do (Such as Pres Clinton was going to declare Marshall law in Jan 1998 or so). This preacher disallowed my Mom from teaching in the Sunday School all because of something he heard from someone else (she had some slight Family issues in the past). I also hate how these Christians lump everything into one category as being evil, and that you should avoid any worldy thing. If you did that, you would be bored, and obviously, these people are, and are going to make everybody else feel the same way. An odd thing is how just about every preacher out there picks on Country music as being the most evil thing out there, but never makes a mention about the most hardcore rock. |

I don't want to get political/religious here or anything, but instead of focusing on "criticizing" an art that depicts MANY things, shouldn't these people be trying to fix tangible social issues? Such as those that we see today like poverty, crime, famine, disease instead of claiming Anime and Manga is evil in their narrow view of things.
Anyway before Anime it was artwork done by Michealangelo. These people always seem to want to be critics and "social changers." |

This has basically nothing to do with anime, and more to do with religious interpretations of things.
Crossroads has its problems, but (depending on what you believe) it also makes some valid points.. but I'm not comfortable with this topic, so I'm locking it. |
