I, for one, like most every ending I have ever seen (EVA being a notable exception, a full hour of quasi-existentialist introspection is not my cup of tea). In fact I would say that the often ambiguous ending to most anime is one of the main reasons that I am a fan. I think it comes down to respecting the viewer; anime creators think their fans are smart enough to think about the story for themselves and come to their own conclusions as to series.

I'd think One Piece uncut on dvd would be guaranteed, because there isn't enough of a kiddie market for the cut dvd's
like there is for Shaman King or Yu Gi Oh. As for ambiguous endings, I only like them when they're intentional, not when they couldn't afford to make a real ending, so they just copped out instead. (See the Blair Witch Project.) As for Escaflowne, it suffers more from a weak climax rather than a weak ending, because they didn't have enough funding to expand it beyond 26 episodes, so it isn't as epic as it could have been. |

I've always held that the supposed differences between Japanese and Western storytelling aren't really as great as some people believe. Look at most anime movies. They usually tie up fairly well. As do the vast majority of manga and live action movies. And when we go back to Japanese legends, myths, and classic stories, there's no great difference between their overall structure and those of their western counterparts.
No, the difference is that serialized anime has at least two strikes against it from the word go- It has to deliver the ratings and (typically) it's got to keep up with a manga. When one or both of those things goes even the slightest bit wrong, you end up with something like the final season of Rurouni Kenshin, or an imcomplete (in the grand scheme) tale like Hellsing. |

ANN's script automatically links certain keywords to the encyclopedia. I've is the name of a band in Japan. I *think* their official name is I've/KOTOKO, but I'm not sure. |

A introductionary anime short was included in the latest Negima audio release, a DVD. Animated by XEBEC (Love Hina, Stellvia), it shows the scene where Negi Sprigfield graduates and learns what his task is (first volume), plus introductions to some of the characters in Negima.

I find it slightly odd that people might complain about an anime series being open ended, while at the same time this more easily allows for a subsequent season (which is just as often complained about). And in the same breath, american series, both cartoons and drama/sitcoms are highly episodic with little to no seasonal or year to year continuity (moreso for cartoons). And soap operas!
If there is to be no more Berserk or Hellsing, then I would find those endings very frustrating. And in the same breath, if someone tried to come out with a second season of say, Cowboy Bebop, I would find that idea revolting because the series had great closure. |
