My friends and I rented Tokyo Godfathers the other night. It's an animated movie from Japan about three homeless people who find a baby and try to hunt down her parents. It's animated, and from Japan, but it's not in the typical anime style -- it's very realistic. Now we're trying to decide if the definition of anime covers movies like TG that aren't in the style we associate with Japanese animation. Thoughts?

If you thought Tokyo Godfathers was out there, just wait until Mindgame comes out. Hoo boy.
However, that is a great question. There's a great article here about Japan's independant and stop-motion animators, none of whom get recognized over here. But that scene has more in common with the American and European festival scenes than any other anime, which is a term whose meaning is changing quite a bit with people using it to refer to anything derived from the Japanese style (such as Wonderful Days). And it's not like in Japan what we refer to as anime is much of a scene. I doubt that Mamoru Oshii, Satoshi Kon, and the good people at Ghibli hang out with the guys who make Naruto, or even bothered to find out who made it in the first place. So I dunno, I just use anime to refer to anything filed in the anime subsection of the animation room at Scarecrow Video. They're usually right. |

Now I saw Tokyo Godfathers screened at Anime Expo, so I guess it must qualify as anime.

It depends. If I remember well, all animation created in Japan or by japanese (people or companies) it's animation. What I'm not sure at all is if this means that series as Heidi are anime...However, yeah, Tokyo Godfathers is anime (actually, one of the most rented/bought in USA).
