Why are countries like Japan and Korea so against yaoi when some of its citizens actually enjoy the genre whether or not they are heterosexual, especially if its geared towards women?

I love me some YuruYuri and Saki, so I wouldn't say anything is wrong with it.

Hmm I don't remember it being such a big deal, but I am not really to familiar with the politics connected. I am not silly enough to take what I see in anime/manga as the truth for majority of Japan. But it is the country that has men dress up as women, where an animesque face masks and work in a restaurant.

I know that the issue is offten controversial in western countries because of supposedly being against christian and chatholic morales.

There's no real homosexuality in either of these.

Which is one of my biggest pet peeves with supposed 'yuri' anime...notably the lack of overt homosexuality. I get what they are going for, and I guess it works judging by the number of followers these anime have; but it's really irritating to me personally.

I mean you don't have to be on the level of Strawberry Panic, but if you are going to advertise yourself as a Yuri anime you might want to have at least 1 legit lesbian couple/plot, or at least work towards one. Homosexuality played for cheap laughs (Maria Holic/Yuru Yuri/etc) does nothing for me. Why is there so few mature anime that take the issue of homosexuality seriously? You can count the number of these on one hand.

Is it because of a perceived lack of audience? That such anime wouldn't sell? What's the reason for the lack of overt homosexuality in anime?[/i]

So what are the serios yuri anime, I can list Kanamemo, and Sasameki Koto. But Saki obviouslly had the girls crushing on each other, and several pairings in Yuru Yuri.

I can add Kannazuki no Miko and Mnemosyne to that.

You might want to check out what ptj_tsubasa and juno016 said in this thread, which that article might've influenced this thread here to even exist. If nothing else, it should provide a clue.

That was a very helpful link. Now I fully understand the Japanese psyche in regards to homosexuality. I've had to exensively research the Japanese mentality because of my uni course, but on specific things like homosexuality I never fully understood all the issues, just the basic premise. Very interesting. End of discussion??

I looked at the article conected to the thread.
Quote:
These books contain a little shadow of violence and brutality in them, most of which are to stimulate the sexual feelings and tend to depict women taking the lead over men. We are concerned that if youths read such material, they may have a biased notion that women desire [these feelings].
Also, if there are more depictions where women lead, it will encourage the tendency toward homosexuality and make it difficult psychologically to have a sexual intercourse normally.

Laughing Laughing I find that really funny for some reason.

They think that books of women taking the lead with men will have the men turn gay. So chicks must have guys dictate what they do in a relationship?

No its just a thought I had. I enjoy yaoi very much but, I have the wonder what others think about it. I guess in my 5 year mind I think that everyone should love yaoi the way I do. Smile

I read the same article. That got me thinking about the post that I did. Why would anyone think that something like that would make anyone gay?

I'm glad this is being discussed in a mature matter. I'm a type of person who believes that love is love matter the gender or station in society. I don't have a clue about Japanese or asian culture but, I do believe in fighting for the right to be happy and no matter what, that is the most important thing in the world. Very Happy
