Much as I would like to see a death metal band do an intro to an anime (tell me Morbid Angel wouldn't do a song called "Melody of Oblivion" or Nile do a song called "Dead Aggressor"), that just *ain't* gonna happen. Power metal and hair rawk are both the norm and the extreme when it comes to anime tunes. Sorry, dude.

I don't really know the difference between the two... is Black Heaven based on power metal or death metal? All I know is it's an anime about metal rock.

When I think of power metal, I think of lots of keyboards, galloping guitar lines and huge soaring vocals that evoke scenes of fantasy and magic.
When I think of death metal, I think of pummelling double-bass drums, guitars tuned so low they make your subwoofer rumble and gutturally growled vocals that usually don't talk about puppies 'n' kitties.
Neither of these genres are really that mainstream, so there's no way I could give you an example of either that you'd know. I'd post a link to a record company site, but that's probably against Teh Rules.

id say, iron chef has things figured out, but it would be a leap forward if they did put death metal in ..an you may be right...may never happen ..but having hypocrisy or cryptopsy..would be decent for backround buzz for some violent anime...
an its odd ..not sure what final fantasy this is but the one with tidus in it ..one of the end bosses music had death metal in it ...it suprised me ...too bad it was a crappy song..could have been better..

I think there was an anime on MTV2 last weekend that had some death metal in it. I know it was Heat guy J but I can't remember the name of it. I was so busy all that day I couldn't really watch but maybe a minute of each Ep. I do remember the music sounded like death metal though.

Dream Theater is progressive metal. I highly doubt that death metal would make it into anything as mainstream (we're talking Japan here) as anime.

The least that you can listen to in animé openings and (perhaps) in animé ending, is power metal, and most commonly J-rock or Visual Kei. There is a good and recent example. "Mnemosyne no Musumetachi". It has gore/fantasy/psychological/TECH-NOIR elements, it is more serious and less love-oriented than Elfen Lied (which I also like but got utterly disappointed with the last episode's conclusion, it was too ambiguous). The animé opening is performed by the Power Metal (progressive metal??...nah....) band Galneryus. Pretty nice band, and the lyrics were appropriate. There's also the so iconic in those terms, Death Note, but its J-rock/metal... Japan wouldn't like death metal or more alternative genres of music to go along with the animé op, not that that would jeopardize the occidental market of animé, but in their homeland, it would just not be expected, but nevertheless it depends strictly on the style of the animé itself.

Hey, both Children of Bodom and In Flames have done concerts in Tokyo, so seeing something like death metal isnt completely out of the question if it fits the series.

Oh, they do talk about puppies and kitties from time to time, but usually about what happens when you throw them into a meat grinder or boil them in acid.
Being fan of death metal myself I've noticed it's a pretty diverse genre. Some of the subgenres are technical death, doom death, brutal death, progressive death, melodic death, blackened death, deathgrind etc. Some of the artists in these various subgenres aren't necessarily as extreme as the most infamous death metal bands would make you believe.
I agree with Iron Chef though that death metal and anime mix like oil and water.
