Yes, this is definitely a genre where the progenitors remain the best choices. Tenchi Muyo!, Ah! My Goddess, Urusei Yatsura, and I think Maison Ikkoku would suit your needs quite nicely.

Hmm. A few random ideas, here (not to be confused with an exhaustive list):
If you haven't already seen the followup series to Onegai Teacher, named Onegai Twins, then this is a logical place to start. Opinions are divided on whether it is better or worse than the first series, but I personally like it better.
Opinions are equally divided on Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, which is a mature romance story, with fairly realistic (I just know I'm going to get flamed for this) character portrayals. Which is to say, it's as realistic as any live-action romance movie ever is.
Then, of course, there is Chobits. This is really an excellent romance, as one would expect from a CLAMP product. It is also the subject of its own cult following, sometimes to a rather obnoxious degree. It is to romance anime what Neon Genesis Evangelion is to mecha anime, so to speak.
Other excellent romance series are Boys Be and Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou. Of these, the former has the best overall feel - in that it is complete and well-paced throughout. The latter is a better anime to start off, but manages to trail off into a very unsatisfactory ending. Still, it's excellent as far as ep. 20 or so.
Mediocre overall, but with good moments: To Heart.
To be avoided, unless you feel like covering all bases: First Kiss Story and Psychic Academy. They're not exactly bad, but I can honestly say it is time better spent otherwise.
Comedy + Romance make for something that is almost a third genre of its own. Of course, Love Hina (which you already know) is among the top anime in this field, but also worth watching is Rizelmine. A much-neglected OVA called Koko wa Greenwood also belongs in this crossover genre - and so does the aforementioned Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou, really.

There's also Ai Yori Aoshi which has all the ingredients of a harem anime except take a little different spin on the protragonist relationship. The two main characters are basically together from episode one and the story moves from there. Do stay away from the terrible sequal at all costs though.

I usually can't stand shounen romance, but I do admit to having a love of Maison Ikokku and Kimagure Orange Road. You should check those out.

I don't believe anyone else mentioned it, but Kare Kano is also a good one to get if you're looking for romance anime.

For general romance anime, yes. But, I believe the poster is looking for shounen romances.

Well I would sugguest Dual parallel trouble done by the creators of tenchi. Theres also mention in the series about the light hawk wings. I would of said the obvious choice tenchi, but other people beat me to the punch. I think you also might like his and her circumstance. Tts a nices romance series.

Visions of Escaflowne is kind of good. It's shounen, but I wouldn't quite say it's a real romance. It still has romance though.
And if you're willing to try shoujou, I'd highly recommend Fushigi Yuugi and Kare Kano.
