I've looked around the forums for this before, and didn't find much on this topic. I don't know what your policy is on screenscraping, and whether providing an api would decrease ad revenue or put too much of a load on the servers, but I think an api would be pretty useful, for two things.
First, I use the ANN encyclopedia pretty frequently as i browse for new anime. It would be cool to be able to send a query with just an anime title, and get back the closest match right away, kind of like how wikipedia works if you use a search toolbar. This wouldn't really require an api, just an automatic "i'm feeling lucky" style way to search the encyclopedia.
Second, I want to be able to incorporate My Anime lists into other web apps. There was a brief thread about Facebook on here that quickly ran off topic, but I can think of some genuinely good uses. There are tons of apps that let you keep track of movies, books, and music, particularly your favorites or what you're currently enjoying. Most of these are based on Amazon.com's database of DVDs and Books, but I'd much rather use ANN's encyclopedia for anime, since Amazon is oriented around products you can buy instead of the actual series.
Anyways, I know that as developers, your priority is supporting all the content that gets put on the site, and you probably don't have the time for jumping into every fancy web trend that comes a long, but I've been wishing for these things for a while now. If you provided some basic api tools, I bet there are people who would be happy to make their own apps that use it. Even an RSS feed of recent My Lists changes would be awesome.
