I'm not too familar with Manga. I've read some GTO and Berserk Manga and they're both awesome. Most of the manga I buy were based on what I thought about them in anime form. There's tons of good manga that never made it to anime though. Just wondering if anybody can recommend a protentially long running (20+ vol) Manga that's not too kiddy and not too girly (romatic/drama) for an average guy. The reason I want long running is I want to collect one book per month and still be able to enjoy it. I was thinking of picking up SDK (Samurai Kyo Deeper) or Saiyuki because it seem cool. What you guys think.

Also where's a good place/site to start finding information on manga

Don't read to much manga myself either but you might want to check out Akira or Ghost in the Shell. Ok so both were made into anime but the manga's stories are more extenisve. Also if you like Akira try Domu although its not long running.

You also might want to try some Osamu Tesuka manga, Tesuka's work is universal. I particularly suggest his Pheonix series.

Pheonix sound very interesting, I will have to do some research on it. I'm not an Akira fan, but I did appreciate the movie for what has done for anime.

Not all of these are 20+ long, but they're still good reads:

Vagabond, Lone Wolf and Cub, Initial D, X (though it's at a standstill...), Rurouni Kenshin, Hellsing, Battle Angel Alita, and heck, you may even enjoy Naruto.

Samurai Deeper Kyo is okay as is Chronicles of the Cursed Sword. They're almost the same thing. I found myself getting bored with them, though.

(Only 3 volumes)...you might like Planetes, too.

You might want to try looking into the Japanese Imports and get a translation or a Katakana/Hirigana guide.

Five Star Stories is a good pick.

I'm suggesting X, but you mentioned "girly" being dramatic... X is dramatic, but I wouldn't really call it girly. It's bloody, and violent, ect, and most guys who want to stay away from CLAMP stuff actually enjoy X.

Love Hina is great, as is Trigun, Hellsing and Full Metal Panic

I'm a 39yo married guy and I read all types of Manga.
Infact the latest one in my collection is Cardcaptor Sakura Razz
But if that's too girly for you (with its not so subtle hints of saphic love) then i'd suggest something on the lines of:

3x3 Eyes (Horror with a love story attached, 8 vols)
Outlanders (Si-Fi lovestory with lots of battles, 8 vols)
Lone Wolf and Cub (semi-historical Japanese history, 28 vols)
Excel Saga (Okay, this ones just completely nuts).

When you become more confident of your sexuality (just joking Laughing), you might try Oh My Goddess! (17 vols, with 18 just about to be released)

I agree with those who have said Lone Wolf and Cub. By the sounds of it,it is the kind of thing you will like. Plenty of action and blood. Its also long running.

Well it's not that i'm insecure about my sexuality. I just find that most of the anime that girls like, I probably would not like. A female friend of mine suggested gravitation and fake. YUCK

I can't stand Love Hina. Also I can't imagine myself reading a romantic comedy novel while waiting for my next class. So when I say for guys, I'm just looking for manga that's gear towards the male audience.

Thanks for the many recommendation. Isn't Lone Wolf and Cub a japanese movie? I think i saw a preview of it while watching Zatoichi.

This is kind of offtopic, but are Manga like Ruruoni Kenshin and Hellsing have the same story/meaning as the Anime. I mean it would be pointless to collect Trigun Manga if I already seen the anime with the same plot. Do manga storyline contineu wherelse the anime stop. I really wanna see more of Trigun, will the manga cover more then the anime.

From what I hear, the Trigun manga is still ongoing under the title Trigun MAXIMUM, and deviates quite a bit from the anime.

As for Rurouni Kenshin, it's pretty close to the anime through the Kyoto Arc, save that it lacks the pointless filler (sumo episode, train robbery episode, etc.) and goes into a little more detail at times. But after Kyoto, it goes into a completely different direction; where the anime turned to crap, the manga embarks on arguably the best part of the series, the Jinchuu Arc.

Hellsing is much better in manga form. Certain events occur in a different order that provides a much better flow to the story (Integra's past, meetings with Anderson, such events occur at different points than the anime, for the most part). And again, where the anime became a complete waste with that Incognito nonsense, the manga embarks on a rather spectacular story arc involving spoiler[a Nazi remnant seeking to create a vampire army.]

Great, your information is very helpful. I decided that I will collect 3 series. Trigun MAXIMUM is coming out this month. The anime was one of my favorite, so I'm difinitely gonna get this since it provide fresh new content. I'll also be getting the two volume of Hellsing since many people is claiming that it's really cool.

I did some research, and SDK seems like a cool manga to check out. it's well over 20 volume. How close does it follow the anime and is it better then the anime. The same way that bersek manga is a lot better then the anime.

I'm getting most of my manga on ebay, I hope they come in good condition since they're preown. They're a lot cheaper too.

The fangirls seem to want men to read their Yaoi now. It is really disterburing. I think too often they don't really understand that their hot Yaoi action isn't pretty in real life.
As for Love Hina, it was created for men around 20. The manga has a good storyline, and is a romance aimed at men. There is such a thing, but it is nearly non-existance in American works.
Lone Wolf and Cub movies are baised on the manga, at least to my understanding. Usually the manga comes first and Anime/LA are basied on them, sometimes very strictly, some times very loosly. It depends on many things, but also how much manga is out when the anime starts. Trigun started when the manga was not out long, and made up about half the plot. Hikaru no Go on another hand is pretty faithful to the orginal material.

My picks for a twenty plus male include those listed, with a strong suggestion that Oh My godess is quite good, and made for men, Black Jack is a medical thriller and Damn Good, GTO is often fairly good, Planetes is great hard scifi, and Naurto has ninjas.

I'll joke and try to get a guy to read it, knowing that he never will...honestly I would be disturbed if my guy friends starting seriously reading yaoi...

and of course hot yaoi action isn't pretty in real life, but it's oh so pretty in anime and manga Wink

Negima! is pretty damn cool. As far as something really cool geared toward a more male audience I'd say Evangelion, the manga that is. SDK is a good pick, and as far as Love Hina goes stay away if you don't like getting hooked on things. It's freakishly addicting. grr... still reading fanfic...Anime hyper
