To your comments on the lashback against a woman making a gender statement.
Rather than people actually disagreeing with your statement (as I doubt there are THAT many people who truly believe, at least in the west, that women need different 'special' treatment) I'd think that, to a degree it is merely a lashback against the inundation of that sentiment. When a woman starts talking about gender issues...or hell when almost anything talks about gender issues (headless synthesised voices for example) it is almost always a case of women being treated unfairly in a 'mans' world. I for one am sick and tired of gender issues discussion being about nothing more than women =/= men but they should be. Is that the only topic in gender discussions? I've yet to read/see/hear one that doesn't use it as the majority material or the entirety of the discussion. |

I'm guessing that since this is just the first article, they just used it to introduce themselves and get the obvious out of the way. @Bamboo: Any chance of this becoming a podcast instead? Last edited by rti9 on Tue Aug 26, 2008 3:04 am; edited 1 time in total |

I think the only comment this new feature deserves is:
pix pl88s! But seriously, now anime has its own "The View". Yay! |

An interesting read, and a great concept. Though when I read the title, I thought it would be talking about female fans in general and their experiences, but maybe that's for another week.
Anyway, I'm male and yet I found the topic worthwhile, if only to hear things from a perspective that I normally don't have access to. I cannot wait to hear your thoughts on Harem Anime next week; if you three (or four counting Robin) hate it as much as I do, then it should be pretty amusing. |

Am i the only one who finds this topic really interesting?
I liked especially the second part and i can't wait to see what you have to say about harem anime. It's funny because I am a shoujo fan and all, and definitely won't apologize for my addiction to cuteness and romance, but i discovered that for instance I can't truly enjoy a classic like Itazura na KIss which i am currently watching because, despite its great characters and the genuine depth in the story, i find it too sexist. I am a bit tired of the stereotype of the shoujo heroine, silly, albeit well-intentioned girl with no mind of her own, who is kind, but almost never smart. I loved the way you mentioned Shurei from Saiunkoku Monogatari, since she is a truly strong heroine, not to mention Oscar from ROV. I also love Makino Tsukushi from Boys over Flowers. She loves Domyouji, but in the anime, and especially in the manga, she stays true to herself, is strong, independent and fights for what she believes in. |

I guess I would be one of the people who would be surprised if the animator of a good short film was female. I just don't think about that stuff, and my mind somewhat nearly always considers a man.
It might have something to do with Hollywood, since I can recall only one female director, and that is the daughter of Francis Ford Coppola, Sophia - so men as directors are definitely a lot more common. Tastes, I believe, are not necessarily linked to genders. A friend of mine loves To Love-Ru, while I didn't bother watching it at all, although men are definitely the target audience. If a woman reviews a harem show and crushes it, why should it be different from a man? Probably, they can stick closer to "objectivity" because they are not so captivated by naughty thoughts or whatever. Just some ideas. |

Interesting. Will there also be a column with grunting, sweaty males, spitting and chewing cigars as they curse, burp, and discuss shonen and giant robots?

The View: ANN Edition
joking aside, i enjoyed the discussion... i remember "Chix" Comics...i'm a guy and i was offended by that label...it did sound far more dirtier like it belongs on a hentai manga than on Card Captor Sakura... |

I found this to be a very insightful and deeply thought-provoking article. And I'm very excited that it's to be continued on a weekly basis.
Also, to the male respondents of this feedback, I want to extend my sincerest gratitude for lending intelligent, understanding, even empathetic opinions to this topic. |

If it makes the female reviewers feel any better, Zac got slammed just as hard as any of them would have for his reviews of Mahoromatic.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to next weeks column and hope that the discussion of Harem anime will also include reverse harem series like Ouran Highschool Hostclub, Fushigi Yuugi and Harukanaru Toki no Naka de. |

I'm glad to see a new column with a bit of substance to it - the recent deluge of columns dealing with peripheral subjects (video games, toys, plastic pop music, conventions) haven't really held any appeal for me - though I'm sure many other people enjoy them - but this is something I'll be actively looking forward to reading more of.
Mind you, I can't be the only one anticipating a weeaboo backlash once this column starts tackling the casual sexism and outright misogyny found in many anime productions (and in otakudom more generally). If you can bring back Mike Toole's Anime Jump Show too, then as far as ANN's opinion pieces go, I'll be a happy man. |

I think part of the problem some guys have with Feminazis is that there are also some gender inequalities favouring women as well, like child custody, educational achievement, and mainly that some "feminazis" become rabid man haters. That said it certainly doesn't apply to all actual feminists. I personally think that there is some value to the established gender roles to an extent.
However I'd be more interested in hearing what women think of Yamato Nadeshiko, or Giant Robots. |

Well, why is that sexist? It's a steriotype that women cook. And? It's also a steriotype than men are perverts getting nosebleeds every fives seconds in half of all anime, and to me, that is more detrimental then simply a steriotype where you can cook. Yet we, men, are not saying 'It's sexist!' - because it's clearly an over-the-top, exaggerated joke. It's not saying 'I think all women should stay in the kitchen.' it's saying 'This is a chance for a few laughs.' I'm sorry, but the people saying you are not having a sense of humour are right there. You are taking it too seriously, and you want to say it's sexist. If you just ignored it and got on with it, then fine. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you have to find it funny, but saying it's sexist is a joke, or, it means that sexist is a term that shouldn't be taken seriously. To me, sexism is where someone doesn't give a job to someone because of their sex, or something like that. Structuring a joke around a stereotype is hardly sexism, in my opinion.
Well, in fairness, it's less common, so why should they not be surprised? I'm surprised when someone I know online turns out to be female, as it's a fact that 90% of the people I meet online are male, so it is less likely that they are going to be female. It's just a matter of fact.
Now, I wasn't there, I don't know for sure, but to me, that sounds like you are putting words to them. Just because they were surprised, you presume they are surprised it was good and a woman made it? You sound like you are looking for sexism. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying all men are not sexist. But I think a lot of women do tend to presume men are being sexist when in fact they are just making innocent statements. Edit: Would you look at that, first post and it isn't about Linux. |

I think one thing that has to be understood is that in a discussion of sexism the idea is not that anything that is in line with a stereotype is promoting that stereotype, ie. a woman who is good at cooking and does so in a non-professional capacity is not necessarily meant to be a promotion of or an expression of the belief that women are always good at cooking/should be and want to do this for their (also often assumed to exist) partner and children. The idea is not "this is always sexist because it can be expressed in a sexist way" or "this is never sexist because it can be expressed in a non-sexist way" but that there may be sexism present and this is a valid topic for discussion.
