About a year ago, I posted my wish in one of the threads in the talkback forum that someone would release a DVD anthology of Osamu Tezuka's experimental films. I noticed a similar sentiment was expressed in another thread (didn't want to bump any of them up, so I opened this new topic).
Anyway, just a couple of weeks ago, I discovered that such a DVD, with English subs and cool extras exists... in Australia. It's distributed by Madman Entertainment. You'll need a multi-region DVD player and a system capable of screening PAL, but the disc landed in my mailbox today and let me tell you - it's worth the effort. All 13 experimental films produced by Tezuka, from "Tales of a Street Corner" (actually, his very first animated production in 1962) to "Self Protrait" (1988) are included. Picture and sound treatment is excellent, noticably in "Pictures at an Exhibition" (Tezuka's 1966 answer to Disney's "Fantasia", and in many ways his most ambitious animated production). Also included are commentaries by Philip Brophy and Anthony Lucas, and a 20-minutes interview with Tezuka himself, following the production of "Jumping". Overall, a really cool DVD release, highly recommend, a must for Tezuka fans and "arthouse animation" fans. I also took the oportunity, while on the Madman website, to purchase another exclusive release by them... "Space Firebird 2775". They have it on DVD, in the original Japanese dub, with English subtitled, uncut! Haven't had a chance to see it yet. Still going over the experimental shorts DVD... I've heard of that Australian edition alright, I would certainly love to buy it as well. I loved Jumping, Memory, and Broken Down Film...
