Exactly, 3 reasons why I won't buy this, no sub = dub only (Massively changed from the original), and I imagine with FUNimation releases nowadays, all overlayed with English rubbish (No Multple Angles anymore) and the series is massive, too much of a commitment. |

I tried watching this series before, but the content is far too ofensive for me. Hearing nothing but swears and disgusting bathroom jokes isn't all that fun, nor is that plesent to hear.

Hmm..
I guess overall in the thread, I seem to be the only one who likes Shin-Chan so far. I know the reasons why it's dub only, though. >.>; I wonder if Toei didn't want them to use the original subs. I'm surprised by the F rating on the animation though, just because it isn't as pretty as other anime makes it sucky? |

Toei has nothing to do with the show. |

I think you're thinking about this release as if it were a traditional anime, which I don't think Funimation were intending. Although it's a long series, it's very episodic with not much of an actual plot; in Japan it was a family show akin to The Simpsons. Funimation has deliberately changed the script to such a degree that the humour appeals to a Western audience of teens in the same way as Family Guy. That's one of the reasons the sub was not included, it would've completely contradicted how they would've wanted to market the series and who they wanted to market it to. Also, knowing how elitist so many anime fans can be (shunning a dub with even just a slightly altered script) I think they wanted to avoid any unnecessary "YOU BUTCHERED THE ORIGINAL" rants. To some degree they really had to do this with Shin-chan anyway, as it contains a lot of Japanese humour that literally will just not translate appropriately. For example, in Japan it's normal to say "I'm back" when entering your house, but a joke in the original Shin-chan was Shin saying "Welcome back" in its place. Not hilarious to the general Western audience I'm sure you'd agree. I was a fan of the old UK dub that was slightly closer to the original material though, so I would've liked something like that; but it just probably wouldn't sell enough. |

It's not the Japanese pop culture references which keep the show from getting an original language, subbed release. It's the fact that it's hundreds of episodes long, and they're not sure it'll fly, because they blew it on Case Closed, and they don't want to repeat history.

Exactly. FUNi's dub was intended for [adult swim] from the beginning, and these DVDs are being marketed to the same audience that would purchase a Family Guy or Robot Chicken DVD set. (Hell, [as] even lists Shin-Chan amongst their comedy series, not their anime titles.) I understand that certain hardcore anime fans might be a bit upset that this release is dub-only, but it's not really intended for that sort of purchaser at all. The one thing that does irritate me is people criticizing the set on that point who have never seen the dub before, since I feel like they've missed the point entirely.
That being said, this show is freaking hilarious, and if I had any spare cash at all, I'd buy this set in an instant. Stupid lack of said spare cash... |

Do people really think you need to know what was changed in the dub in order to appreciate the humor? I don't buy that, what you laugh at is what you get and really the only problem with the new humor in this adaptation is that sometimes it feels overly written, that it doesn't really fit the context of the story, but the writers have gotten better at it as they've gotten more familiar with the show. I just feel like a lot of fans and reviewers are putting too much focus on the fact that it's very different from the Japanese version. As a fan of both versions (FUNimation version and original Japanese version) I'd like to see more people talk about the characters, storyline, and animation.

Since there's some weeaboo bitterness sloshing around this thread, I felt I should mention that I really like Funi's version. It's funny, which is more than I can say about most anime comedies.
Having said that, I am often kinda distracted by wondering what they've changed, or noticing more obvious changes. Oh, well. Having said that, there are some jokes that only anime fans could get, like how the TV superhero's young girl sidekick is named "lollypop", and sometimes they even make fun of the whole overtaking, as when they made an American political joke and Shin said "I thought we lived in Japan". |

I've never seen the series and I will most likely rent a DVD before I decide if I want to drop $40.00 on this or something else.

For people who are really interested in seeing part of the original Japanese, they strung together all the Enchman sequences into a single "episode" as an extra. There are jokes, but they aren't gut busters, more like knee slappers. I like the dub better.
