I caught the new Indiana Jones movie on Friday, and yes he is 20 years older and the screenplay reflected that well, it was still well done overall (provided it is the LAST Indiana Jones movie, time to pass the torch).
Surprisingly, after it was over, I was struggling to come up with an anime equivalent to it. Is the pre 40's pulp (or in the case of this movie, late 50's) just so culturally different that no anime has thought to borrow? Or have I missed some gem that snuck through? As to Indiana Jones, there were three key SFX related scenes that I thought stood out (atomic bomb, saw blade and final). If the atomic bomb is a spoiler, then you must have been expecting a very short movie. For all three scenes, I struggle to find and anime that provided the same umph. Now it could certainly be watching it on my computer versus in the theater where they seem intent on destroying my eardrums. I may be done with theaters. So, are there any anime that I have missed that captures the pre 40s and 50's pulp appeal of Indiana Jones? Gewürtztraminer |

Not really. Maybe try Master Keaton though it's a similliar concept of an archeologist/adventuer type guy. I wouldn't say it's pulp though.

Golgo 13 comes to mind but he's more of a Bondish character although I would argue that from what I've seen, Golgo does try to make itself fairly dramatic and a little pulpy, a little more realistic than your average seres.

The closest thing to Indy is Jojo's Bizarre adventure. The over the top action really feels like those movies. The main villain has the power of an ancient Native American artifact which makes him undead. The adventures lead the main characters around many places of the world and covers several generations. Joseph Joestar even reminds me of Indiana Jones especially in the 1937 arc in the manga. He again plays a major role in the third arc (which the OVA is based off of) as an older grizzled hero who fights along side with his grandson.

A couple days before I read this post, I was just chatting with a friend who mentioned that Baccano is the Indiana Jones of anime. Of course, she didn't mean that there's any character in Baccano who's like Indy, himself. Also, the show doesn't venture into the same locales as Indiana Jones. However, it does have a great pulp feel to it: early 30s, crowded metropolises, a speeding train, and tons and tons and tons of action nicely split between fisticuffs and gunfights. I've mentioned before that it's a lot like a good Tim Powers novel.

There is actually an adventure/pulp type anime done in 1989 called Explorer Woman Ray that's quite a bit like Indiana Jones. It's a fun two episode OVA series. Sort of an unintentional pre-cursor to Tomb Raider. Also, Kindan no Mokushiroku: Crystal Triangle has quite a few elements like Indiana Jones, in that the main character is a professor of archeology and an adventurer who gets himself into a lot more trouble than he can handle. It too was a fun little movie, originally released in 1987. Considering most folks' tastes nowadays though, I'm sure both are too old to be considered watchable. Worth at least a look I'd say, though.
