It must have been forced on them as part of a deal.

Brings back memories of queueing up outside Toys R Us for hours before they opened so that I could get my Tamagotchi... I wonder what happened to it?

I think you guys fail to realize that Bandai also makes the Tamagotchi toy line and the rumor is they are launching a new line in the US this summer. :X

But didn't it die already in the US?
It still faces competition from US properties like Dora, Hannah Montana, Bratz and Pokemon. Then there is Naruto. It just doesn't seem like a property that today's kids would be interested in.

Actually, it's more like Bandai Entertainment co-produced the TV series and the movie.

Am I the only one who thinks the promo art is ADORABLE? It'll definately be an excuse to watch something with no entertainment value. "But it's in the sake of SENTIMENTALITY, mother! SENTIMENTALITY!!"

You can still buy Tamagotchi at any department or toy store. They relaunched a few years ago and have been doing fairly well. There have been a few video games released, some figures, and interactive web sites as well. This isn't the usual otaku fodder, this is strictly being released for little girls.

My condolences.
Got a young female relative. Not even in her vocabulary. It's Dora the Explorer only for her.

The Tamagotchi craze 11 years ago hit at the right time in America. It was just before the surge of cellphones, PDAs, handheld games, iPods, etc. Basically, something people could bring with them to play when they're bored.
Now that other, more sophisticated portable distractions are available, I doubt Bandai would catch lightning in the bottle twice. May just be a low but steady earner for them.

The newest models are PC and web interactive which gives kids a new dimension of play over the originals that were confined to the device.
